A dark comedy/thriller, Start Square is an intriguing production that tackles the issues of domestic abuse against males, gender stereotyping and loss in an extraordinary way. The main character, Arthur Watt, is a lonely old man who finds love in a widow, however this new found love forces him to come to terms with sinister events from his past.

The play features a giant parrot who slowly reveals truths, taking the audience on an emotional journey and slowly feeding them bits of the jigsaw to piece together. The show climaxes with a huge revelation in the final scene — leaving viewers questioning things about domestic violence like never before.

This dynamic play is supported by the Paul Lavelle Foundation — the amazing charity that was created by a group of friends following the murder of Paul Lavelle by his partner. The Paul Lavelle Foundation aims to raise awareness of domestic abuse against men, whilst setting up sports based support groups and raising money through charity cycles, swims and other events.

Charity founder member Paul Gladwell told us: “Domestic violence against men is one of the biggest taboos. Many of the people who reach out to us are sisters and mothers — not the male victims themselves. I’m surprised that someone has written a play about it but it’s fantastic because it’s something that needs to be put out there to raise awareness and make people think differently.”

Another fine fringe production coming to The Hope Street Theatre that deals with important issues, this is set to be another triumph for local talent. The play is penned by Sharon Colpman, the creator and Executive Producer of Make It Write Productions CIC — a group dedicated to staging plays from new playwrights — and directed by Stephanie Hudson.

Sharon told us: “I wanted to explore the gender stereotypes around domestic violence and have worked with schools regarding discrimination. Gender was a big issue for the children that I spoke to, particularly how men and women are supposed to behave. I imagined these issues played out in the lives of an elderly couple and how it might cause catastrophic problems. I’ve also explored grief and loss but in an unusual scenario.
