Chaat is celebrating its second anniversary after transforming what many locals knew for almost 25 years as Karma Indian Food into an exciting new concept centred around Indian small plates, bold flavours and inventive cooking. The transformation came courtesy of Hussain Miah, who evolved the long-established family business into something altogether different.

Even before the small plates arrive, it’s clear this isn’t your average Indian restaurant. Forget the traditional basket of circular papadoms served alongside the usual mint yoghurt and mango chutney. Papadom Chaat sees crisp papadoms broken into bite-sized pieces before being covered in an irresistible medley of chutneys, pickles and sauces. It looks wonderfully chaotic – and tastes even better.

The small plates are where Chaat really comes into its own. The Paneer & Pineapple Tikka is a perfect example of the kitchen’s willingness to think differently, balancing smoky grilled paneer with the sweetness of pineapple for an unexpected but delicious combination. Equally memorable is the Coconut Chicken – tender chicken tikka coated in a mildly spiced mango and coconut chutney that delivers layers of sweetness, warmth and gentle spice in every bite.

Seafood lovers shouldn’t overlook the Garlic Shrimp, featuring succulent tiger prawns cooked in a rich creamy garlic sauce infused with turmeric and fragrant curry leaves. What makes these dishes stand out isn’t simply the ingredients, but Hussain’s thoughtful use of spices. Rather than relying purely on heat, every dish is carefully layered with aromatic flavours that make each plate distinctive and memorable.
Chaat’s fascinating menu also features dedicated vegan and gluten free menus, ensuring that there’s a great range of innovative dishes for everyone. The best way to experience Chaat is exactly as intended – sharing. Ordering four or five small plates between the table allows diners to sample the restaurant’s creativity before moving on to one of the comforting Small Bowls.

Among the standout mains is the Keralan Fish, inspired by India’s south-west coast. The semi-spiced coconut milk curry combines sweet onions with the fruity tang of tamarind to create a beautifully balanced dish that’s packed with flavour without overwhelming the delicate fish. Meanwhile, the Murgh Makhani is a Delhi version with a Chaat twist.
The Highway Chicken and Railway Lamb continue the journey through India’s diverse regional cooking, showcasing recipes that move well beyond the standard curry house favourites. It’s this willingness to celebrate different regions and spice combinations that makes Chaat feel so refreshing. Every dish has its own identity, and it’s difficult to compare the experience with anywhere else on the Wirral.

The creativity extends well beyond the food. Instead of predictable cocktails, Chaat offers an imaginative drinks menu inspired by Indian flavours and you’ll find some real surprises such as the Kaffir Daiquiri — combining orange blossom, lime, white rum and fragrant kaffir lime for a vibrant twist on the classic.
The Tamarind Margarita mixes blanco tequila with tamarind, triple sec, lime and chilli before being finished with a salted rim, while the Chai Express blends chai, coffee liqueur, espresso, vodka and vanilla into an indulgent after-dinner cocktail. Even dessert continues the theme, with Indian-inspired sweet treats providing the perfect finish to an already memorable meal.

For larger celebrations, Chaat also offers an upstairs private dining room, making it an ideal venue for birthdays, family gatherings and special occasions. With its beautiful interiors, inventive menu and exceptional attention to flavour, Chaat has quickly established itself as one of the most exciting independent restaurants on the Wirral.
Hussain Miah said: “It was a bold move taking the family business down a slightly different route. Karma had a fantastic reputation for over 20 years and represented decades of our family’s work, including Grandad and Grandma Miah who opened one of Wirral’s first ever Indian restaurants in the early 70s. The new concept is a big hit, with people travelling for miles to visit, but my family’s heritage is always at the forefront of what we do.”
