A powerful new play about John Lennon’s mother is coming to Liverpool this September — and one lucky audience member will walk away with an incredible piece of Beatles history worth up to £5,000.
Julia’s Song, a new play telling the fascinating and poignant story of Julia Lennon, mother of Beatles legend John Lennon, comes to The Epstein Theatre from 10th–12th September. And as if seeing this remarkable Liverpool story brought to the stage wasn’t enough, Executive Producer Doug Schwab is giving everyone who attends one of the four performances the chance to win an extraordinary piece of authenticated Beatles memorabilia.
The prize, with an approximate value of £4,000–£5,000, includes a photograph of The Beatles during their stay at the George V Hotel in Paris in 1964, together with a piece of hotel paper signed by John Lennon and Paul McCartney. It’s a remarkable piece of Fab Four history — and the story behind that particular trip to Paris makes it even more special.
A piece of Beatles history from a moment that changed everything
The Beatles were staying in Paris when they received the incredible news that they had reached No.1 in America for the very first time. It was a pivotal moment in the band’s history, coming just as Beatlemania was preparing to explode on the other side of the Atlantic and transform John, Paul, George and Ringo into global superstars.
Now, more than six decades later, a piece of memorabilia connected to that extraordinary period could be going home with somebody attending Julia’s Song in Liverpool. Every ticket holder attending one of the four performances at The Epstein Theatre will have the opportunity to enter the competition. Audience members simply fill out an entry form when they attend the show, which places them into the prize draw. One winner will then be drawn at the final performance on 12th September.

The remarkable giveaway comes courtesy of Julia’s Song Executive Producer Doug Schwab, a filmmaker, lifelong Beatles enthusiast and avid memorabilia and souvenir collector from Florida. Doug’s passion for the Fab Four makes his involvement in a production exploring the life of John Lennon’s mother particularly fitting, and he has provided the valuable memorabilia as a special gift to the audiences supporting the play during its Liverpool run.

The woman behind the legend
While the story of John Lennon has been told countless times, the extraordinary life of Julia Lennon is far less familiar. Julia was a colourful, charismatic and unconventional woman whose personality, musicality and influence left a profound mark on her son. Their relationship was also complicated and, ultimately, tragically short.
Julia’s Song puts Julia herself centre stage, exploring the woman behind the famous name and bringing an important part of Liverpool’s cultural and musical history to life. Her influence on the young John was significant. Julia encouraged his interest in music and taught him to play the banjo, helping to nurture the talent that would eventually contribute to changing popular music forever.
Her death in 1958, when John was just 17, had a lasting impact on him. Years later, Lennon would explore his feelings about his mother through songs including Julia and Mother. Julia’s Song gives audiences the opportunity to look beyond the Beatles phenomenon and discover more about the woman who helped shape the young man who would become one of the most famous musicians in history.
Four performances — and one incredible winner
The Liverpool run takes place at The Epstein Theatre from Thursday 10th to Saturday 12th September, with four performances across the three days. Everyone who attends will be eligible to fill in an entry form at the theatre for the chance to win Doug Schwab’s authenticated Beatles memorabilia.
