BLACKFEST RETURNS WITH AN EXCITING 2021 PROGRAMME!

Liverpool’s Black Arts festival, BlackFest, returns to Liverpool on Saturday 18th September with an exciting programme of diverse and thought provoking entertainment and events. Now in its fourth year, the cultural extravaganza offers an array of music, poetry, art, talks, workshops and more over two weeks in various venues.

The festival aims to educate, empower and improve equality in the arts through a range of incredible events and has been praised as one of the most innovative showcases in the city. This year introduces some ground breaking new shows including visual arts, a Toxteth Uprise exhibition and an independent film screening.

The festival begins on Saturday 18th September at 7pm with the Visual Arts Launch at the Baltic Triangle’s Royal Standard. The breathtaking visual arts display returns to the venue for a solo exhibition on Monday 20th September at 10am and then for a workshop at Tate at Tuesday 21st September at 1pm.

Monday 20th September sees the launch of the week long Toxteth Uprise exhibition at the Museum of Liverpool — a fascinating showcase of the Toxteth riots for its 40th anniversary. The evening of Monday 20th September brings their huge Opening Night Arts Extravaganza to Unity Theatre — with poetry, music, theatre and dance from some of the most talented artists in the region.

On Tuesday 21st September at 5pm, Toxteth TV will host an Arts Council workshop, where people can quiz the organisation about funding. There’ll also be an Apples & Pears Spoken Word Workshop at The Hope Street Theatre on Wednesday 22nd September at 5pm and a Victoria Evaristo Drama Workshop at The Everyman Theatre on Thursday 23rd September at 6pm.

Wednesday 22nd September features the Autumn Equinox Living In-Di-Genous project by YammTree — bringing a health, wellbeing and food workshop to Granby Winter Garden at 11am (also at Squash on Friday 24th from 10am). This is followed by a thought provoking and not to be missed Spoken Word Poetry Night at The Hope Street Theatre at 7pm.

On Thursday 23rd September you can enjoy BlackFest Writers Room Rehearsed — a series of 15 minute plays from new emerging black writers and writers of colour at The Everyman Theatre at 7pm (also on Friday at 7pm and Saturday at 2pm). On Friday 24th September at 11am, FACT will host a Same But Different independent film screening — a gripping documentary from a Ghanaian-British award-winning actress, filmmaker, and writer.

Saturday 25th September consists of a Writers Room Rehearsed Reading event — an exciting showcase of new emerging black writers and writers of colour at the Everyman Theatre at 2pm. This is followed by a huge Rhythms Night at Grand Central Hall from 5pm — featuring some of the most talented music acts and DJs such as MC Nelson, Philly Djan, Papu RAF, Funk Butcher, Eliza Mai, AMBA and Starkey The Messenger.

On Wednesday 29th September at 7pm at The Everyman Theatre, there’ll be a book launch of Letters To Gil (a profound story inspired by Gil Scott-Heron). The vibrant festival then draws to a conclusion on Saturday 9th October at 7pm at the Philharmonic Hall with a huge Closing Ceremony Celebration Night — a spectacular night featuring choir music, live music performances, poetry, workshops and more.
