Likened to being the UK’s very own Kacey Musgraves or Dolly Parton, Katie Nicholas is back after focusing on her highly popular Kate Bush events at Camp & Furnace. Nicholas had a promising start on the country music scene after her single, ‘Chemistry’, originally released in 2013 as a Valentine’s Day DIY video, gave the country music curator her first taste of success.

The talented musician landed a No.1 and a No.3 in the UK and Ireland Country HotDisc Chart, as well as the Liverpool Youth Music Award. Although this seemed like the beginning of a successful music career for the Liverpool local, after moving to London to try and secure a record label deal, and working 9-5 as an apprentice designer, Nicholas’ musical presence began to dwindle.

Despite this short hiatus from releasing music, Nicholas has maintained a loyal fan base and continues to sell out live shows. Indeed, most recently, she sold out her live performance at Liverpool Philharmonic Music Room. The country music artist is ready to return to the musical world, giving four previously released tracks a new lease of life.

Her latest release, the four-song EP Chemistry, is a celebration of the music that started her journey as a country music artist. Each of the four tracks, which she penned between the ages of 16 and 19, has been rerecorded and reproduced under her independent record label Ladybird Records.

‘Chemistry’, the eponymous track and also the song that started it all for the country music artist, is a quirky love song infused with science references. “This love is like a new equation / full of chemicals and complications”, sings Nicholas. Her harmonies are accompanied by an upbeat instrumentation.

On the other hand, the tune swiftly changes into a more sombre melody with ‘In Your Shadow’. Nicholas’ lyrics discuss the sadness of a relationship fizzling out, showing how she is unafraid to shy away from personal topics when crafting her music.

The third song on the EP is ‘You Kill Me’, a duet with fellow Liverpudlian singer, folk artist Robert Vincent, who hails from Crosby. The two musicians’ voices intertwine to create “an Americana anthem for the cynic’s true romantic heart.” The Liverpudlian musicians’ harmonies are accompanied by award-winning Americana Music Association UK instrumentalists, including Anna Corcoran, Isabella Baker, Mark Lewis, CJ Hillman, Sean Rogan, Joe Coombs, and more.

The final song on the EP, ‘Ladybird’, showcases Nicholas’ expert lyricism as she uses the metaphor of “Lucy Loo the Ladybird” to explore the theme of the fear around losing someone you love. “But now I see where I went wrong/ I loved you so, but I held on too long”, sings Nicholas.
