FREE AFTERNOON OF JAZZ AT THE CAPSTONE THEATRE THIS OCTOBER!

An epic afternoon of jazz is coming to The Capstone Theatre from 1.30pm on Sunday 19th October — and it’s completely free! Following the success of three Arts Council England–funded showcase concerts at Liverpool International Jazz Festival, Arts Council England is continuing its support with a special follow-up event: LIJF Showcase 2.

This free triple-bill concert features exceptional acts Moore & Fairhall, The Viktor Nordberg Ensemble and Olvine. The showcase offers audiences a rare opportunity to experience three distinctive and boundary-pushing ensembles from the North West — presented as a relaxed Sunday afternoon event, each group will deliver a short set of unique, original music.

Moore and Fairhall: 2PM

A folk-jazz duo like no other, Olivia Moore (violin) and Adam Fairhall (accordion) create music that is both lyrical and rhythmically daring. Their sound blends Indian Ragas, American Folk, and jazz traditions from across the ages.

Moore, who studied under Indian violinist Kala Ramnath, is renowned for weaving Indian classical influences into contemporary jazz, performing internationally with artists including Elaha Soroor, Mukesh Jhadav, and Alabaster De Plume. Fairhall, widely celebrated as a jazz pianist in Nat Birchall’s Coltrane-inspired projects, has in recent years turned his focus to the accordion, pursuing the folk and roots traditions that underpin his musical voice.

The Viktor Nordberg Ensemble: 2.50PM

Led by drummer Viktor Nordberg, this ensemble conjures a cinematic soundscape of rich grooves, atmospheric textures and improvisational dialogue. Their music draws from the spacious elegance of Nordic jazz while embracing the rhythmic drive of contemporary jazz currents.

With Eric Animan (alto saxophone), Luke Ledger (tenor saxophone), Max O’Hara (piano), and Callum Williams (bass), the ensemble crafts a sound that is both expansive and intimate, balancing intricacy with expressive freedom. Expect music that moves with intensity, inviting listeners into a shifting landscape where melody and mood are constantly in motion.

Olvine: 3.40PM

Born out of Liverpool’s thriving music community, Olvine is a jazz-fusion band with an adventurous spirit. Their sound fuses diverse influences: odd meters collide with afrobeat, jungle meets jazz, and future soul flows into drum & bass.

The result is a kaleidoscopic journey — energetic, infectious, and groove-driven — where each musician’s voice shapes the whole. Olvine’s music is both experimental and accessible, drawing audiences into a sonic space that feels at once new and familiar.
