For over 25 years, Karen dedicated her life to teaching in Cheshire primary schools. For the last decade of her career, she specialised in inclusive education, supporting children in challenging circumstances as a Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCo). It was a role she loved — one rooted in empathy, psychology, and communication.
Then, life threw Karen an unexpected challenge. A sudden detached retina left her blind in one eye and facing two major operations at the Royal Liverpool Hospital. “I had two surgeries and six months off work,” she recalls. “It was a scary and uncertain time. I didn’t know if I’d ever see properly again.”
The recovery was slow and mentally exhausting. Despite her natural optimism, Karen found herself battling depression and panic attacks. “It was a long battle but finally my sight was restored,” she explains. “Thanks to the support from occupational health, CBT therapy, and the love of my family and friends, I came through the other side. It was time to think about what came next.”

In October 2020, Karen made the difficult decision to retire early from teaching. She took some time out but it wasn’t long before a new opportunity caught her eye. “I saw my Salsa teacher sharing some interesting posts on social media about Utility Warehouse (UW),” says Karen. “I signed up as both a customer and a partner — and it turned out to be one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.”
Now, Karen works as an independent UW partner, helping households save hundreds — often thousands — of pounds each year on their essential services, from energy and broadband to mobile and insurance. “Many of my customers save between £500 and £1,500 a year,” she says proudly. “For some, that means clearing debts, taking a family holiday, or simply being able to manage rising costs more easily.”

What Karen loves most about her new career is the freedom and balance it offers. “There’s no boss, no performance management, and no mountain of paperwork. I can work from anywhere — even while travelling. I’ve got plans to spend some time as a digital nomad, and UW makes that completely possible.”
The company’s supportive environment and strong sense of community remind Karen of her teaching days — but without the stress. “I used to mentor a team of teaching assistants in school, and now I mentor new UW partners. I’m using the same skills to encourage and guide others, helping them to build confidence, financial freedom, and belief in themselves.”

Attending UW’s bi-annual conferences has also been a source of inspiration for Karen. “The atmosphere is incredible — full of optimism and possibility,” she says. “You see people from all walks of life achieving amazing things. Some don’t have formal qualifications, but they have self-belief and determination. That’s what UW is all about — empowering people to take control of their future.”
Today, Karen is thriving again — not in a classroom, but still changing lives. Her story is a reminder that even after life’s toughest setbacks, it’s possible to rebuild, rediscover purpose, and make a difference in new ways. Karen summarises: “UW gave me back something I’d lost — my sense of purpose and the joy of helping others.”
