REVIEW: GRUPO LUMA & FRIENDS AT THE PHILHARMONIC MUSIC ROOM!

On Saturday 22nd February, we attended the incredible Grupo Luma & Friends concert — a wonderful showcase of Latin American music courtesy of Luma Creations. The evening featured an array of spellbinding music from local and international artists and was a celebration of Latin American music and culture.

The first performance was Montserrat Fuentes Romero (Mexico) — a renowned pianist who dazzled us with her grace before being joined by Grupo Luma’s Francisco Carrasco who played two pieces with her. This mesmerising performance was followed by the charismatic Cuban entertainer, George Peguero (Cuba), whose charm, vocals and guitar skills had us in awe.

Next up was Francisco’s niece Saranne Carrasco-Brennan and Alex McDowall (Chile/UK), a fantastic collaboration between two very talented musicians and powerful lyrics of songs that paid homage to Saranne’s heritage and culture. A most beautiful way to finish the first set at the iconic music venue.

The second half of the show was all about Grupo Luma — an emphatic collective and coming together of vibrant and colourful sounds. Featuring Francisco Carrasco (Vocal, Guitar, Cuatro, Quena, congas), Oscar Carrasco (Vocal, Guitar, Charango, percussion), Max Alder (Cajon, Bombo, Congas, Vocals), Fran Bass (Bass), Erik Bichard (Trumpet, Vocals) and Phil Hargreaves (Sax, Flute), we were treated to something very special indeed.

With powerful lyrics and harmonies and a multitude of sounds, Grupo Luma took us on a breathtaking journey through Latin American culture in what was a high energy and fun performance — a true fiesta and a slice of Latin American right here in one of Liverpool’s most iconic music venues.
