Smith’s artistry has extended beyond the stage and concert arena into film, where he choreographed the sensual sequences of Coyote Ugly and the comedic moves of Jim Carrey in The Cable Guy. His influence in dance has been recognized with multiple accolades, including nominations for the Music Video Producer’s Association Award (1992, 1996, 1997), the SSDC Bob Fosse Award (1996, 1997), and an Emmy nomination in 1996 for Outstanding Choreography.
He has won five MTV Awards for Best Choreography, including one in 2004 for Beyoncé’s iconic Crazy in Love. In addition, Smith has been honoured with the Miller Hall of Greats Award (1994), induction into the DuPont Manual Hall of Fame (2006), and a Lifetime Achievement Award (2006) for innovation in dance and choreography, followed by the Dance Media Honors Award (2007).

Smith’s connection to Michael Jackson defined much of his career. The two first met in 1986 on the set of Smooth Criminal, sparking a creative partnership and friendship that would span more than two decades. Smith danced on Jackson’s legendary Bad Tour, and served as both dancer and choreographer on the Dangerous and HIStory world tours. Together, they crafted performances that have become timeless hallmarks of stage and screen, inspiring countless dancers across generations.
Reflecting on his time with Jackson, Smith often emphasizes the lessons he learned about performance artistry — how to capture an audience, embrace silence, and let movement speak. “The dances we created together will stand as bright beacons in the universe forever,” he has said.
