“WE WERE THE ONLY BLACK PEOPLE BUT WE’VE NEVER FELT SO WELCOME!”

A Liverpool family-run entertainment venue has received some truly heartwarming praise after actor and musician Carl Perkins took to social media to share his experience of an unforgettable night out.
Liverpool Naval Club, a hidden gem in Childwall that has been lovingly run by the Nicholas family for more than 15 years, has been praised for its incredible atmosphere, friendliness and inclusivity after Carl attended a Nick James Ne-Yo tribute night with his partner.

In a moving video shared on social media, Carl explained how he and his partner had been the only Black people in the packed venue, apart from the performer himself, yet had experienced one of the warmest welcomes they had ever received. Despite the audience being, in Carl’s words, around 99% white, he was overwhelmed by the kindness of the people around them.
Carl said: “Walking into this place it was quite clear to us that apart from Nick James, the main performer, and a couple of his friends, we were the only Black people in the venue. And it was packed. Every table was full, the dance floor was full and people were having a really great time. And despite the fact that the place was 99% White, we have never been so welcomed. So many people came over to us, made us feel at home. It was a family atmosphere. A fantastic venue!“

His heartfelt feedback is a powerful reminder that a great night out isn’t just about the entertainment on stage — it’s also about the people, the atmosphere and the feeling of belonging. For Liverpool Naval Club, which has spent years building a reputation for fantastic entertainment and a friendly, family atmosphere, it’s the kind of recognition that means so much more than a glowing review of a show.

Carl himself is a soul and funk singer, model and actor, who has starred in Outlander, Sexy Beast and Cobra — as well as being a Mr. T impersonator. The profound social media testimonial means a great deal to the Nicholas family as father Joe, who took on Liverpool Naval Club in 2010, sadly passed away just a few months ago.
Mark Nicholas said: “Liverpool Naval Club really is off the beaten track, just behind The Rocket pub near the start of the M62. It’s really tough for entertainment venues to survive, especially without natural footfall, so to receive positive feedback like this means so much! When we saw Carl’s video on social media it really touched us as a family as we work so hard to keep this place going, especially after our Dad passed away recently. He would’ve loved this.”

The venue has been a Liverpool institution since 1963, originally operating predominantly as a members’ club for naval and ex-naval personnel. In its heyday, it was affectionately known as a ‘mini Grafton’, with legendary social nights where friendships blossomed and countless couples first met. However, its future was thrown into doubt in 2009 when the Royal Naval Association could no longer sustain the club and the building faced the prospect of being sold to developers.
Step forward the Nicholas family. With strong naval connections and years of fond memories of the club, the family couldn’t bear to see such an important part of Liverpool’s social history disappear. Despite having no previous hospitality experience, they took a huge gamble and bought the venue in 2010, determined to give it a new lease of life.

Mark said: “The journey hasn’t been easy. We’ve faced faced serious personal health challenges, the impact of the pandemic, rising energy costs and the ongoing pressures facing the industry. Not to mention the challenge of running an entertainment venue hidden away from the main road without the benefit of passing trade. But through sheer determination, hard work and a genuine love for the place, we’ve kept the doors open and nights like Carl described.”

With the festive season fast approaching, Liverpool Naval Club is preparing for another busy period of live entertainment, celebrations and memorable nights out. The venue’s diverse entertainment offering makes it a popular choice for groups of friends, couples, families and work colleagues looking to enjoy a great night without the hassle or expense of heading into the city centre.
From brilliant tribute performances and dancefloor-filling classics to themed entertainment and party nights, there’s plenty to look forward to as the club gears up for the Christmas celebrations. The festive period is also an opportunity for new visitors to discover what loyal regulars have known for years — that some of Liverpool’s best nights out happen in the most unexpected places.

And judging by Carl Perkins’ glowing feedback, first-time visitors can expect much more than just quality entertainment. They can expect a proper Liverpool welcome! At a time when traditional social clubs and independent entertainment venues are disappearing across the country, Liverpool Naval Club is a shining example of why these places are still so important.
They’re places where people come together, where friendships are made, where memories are created and where everyone should feel they belong. For the Nicholas family, keeping the club alive has never been just about running a business. It’s about protecting a piece of Liverpool’s heritage and creating a place where people can forget their worries and enjoy themselves. Ans in a time where racism and division is rife in society, we need more places like Liverpool Naval Club.
