WIRRAL EVENTS COMPANY AND LABEL SELLING OUT SHOWS FOR LOCAL ARTISTS!

With sold-out shows, ambitious theatre productions and a growing roster of talented musicians, Wirral-based Events 471 and its record label, 471 Records, are proving that community, collaboration and a passion for local music can create something truly special.
There’s something exciting happening in Birkenhead. Away from the traditional music industry powerhouses, a grassroots movement is quietly making waves, giving local artists the opportunity to develop their music, reach new audiences and perform on stages they might once have only dreamed of.

At the heart of it all is Events 471 and its artist-first record label, 471 Records, a Wirral-based venture that is demonstrating just what can be achieved when musicians come together to support one another. From selling out shows and staging ambitious album launches to taking local talent beyond Merseyside, the team behind 471 is helping to build a thriving music community with Birkenhead firmly at its centre.

Built on Community, Made by Artists
471 Records began with a refreshingly simple idea: to create a space where local musicians could connect, collaborate and grow together. Rather than following the traditional record label model, the emphasis has always been on the artists themselves and the relationships they build with each other and their audiences.
With a musical identity spanning folk, singer-songwriters, alternative pop and left-field indie, the label has brought together a diverse collection of musicians united by a shared creative spirit. And it’s clearly working. Over the past two years, artists have contributed to one another’s recordings, shared stages, exchanged ideas and supported each other’s development.
Events 471’s Carol Hetherington said: “What began as a desire for greater connection has grown into a creative community that is making a real difference to the local music scene. We’ve proven that there is still a genuine appetite for original local music. Our increasingly ambitious live events have attracted enthusiastic audiences, with sold-out performances demonstrating that grassroots artists can draw substantial crowds when given the right platform and support.”
She continued: “It’s an encouraging reminder that the music industry doesn’t have to revolve around major labels, big budgets or established names. Sometimes, all it takes is a group of talented people willing to believe in one another. In a world where it’s never been more difficult for music artists, who are relying almost solely on gigs and merchandise for income whilst venues are struggling, we’re trying to break the mould.”

Big Ambitions, Bigger Audiences
As 471 Records approaches its second birthday, the organisation is showing no signs of slowing down. In fact, its ambitions are growing. One of its most successful approaches has been to develop special performances inspired by the legendary musicians who have influenced its own artists.
Mike Ryan’s Celebrating the Life of David Bowie and Laura Carr’s Joni Mitchell Reimagined are two examples of how 471 is thinking creatively about live music. Rather than simply staging conventional gigs, these productions allow artists to explore the music that inspires them, introduce their talents to different audiences and create something memorable in the process.
Events 471’s Carrick Moran said: “It’s an approach that benefits everyone involved. Audiences enjoy fresh interpretations of beloved music, while local performers gain opportunities to showcase their abilities to people who may never have encountered their original work. Crucially, those new audiences can then discover the artists’ own music, helping to build longer-term support for the local scene.”

Taking Wirral Talent Beyond Merseyside
While Birkenhead will always be home for 471 Records, the label is determined that its artists should have opportunities far beyond the Wirral. Singer-songwriter Liz Owen is one example of that ambition becoming reality. Having recently toured with acclaimed blues musician Jack Broadbent and performed at Manchester Blues Festival, Owen is demonstrating how local talent can flourish when given opportunities to reach wider audiences.
Another artist pushing creative boundaries is Nicola Hardman, whose ambitious Final Curtain Call project has brought together an album and a theatrical production. Combining music with storytelling and performance, the show represents some of Hardman’s most ambitious work to date, with plans for further touring in development.
Carol said: “These projects highlight something important about the 471 philosophy. Success isn’t measured simply by record sales or streaming figures. It’s about helping musicians realise their creative ambitions, experiment with new ideas and build sustainable careers doing what they love.”
She continued: “The label is equally proud of its roots. There is a strong sense of affection for Birkenhead running through everything it does, along with a determination to show audiences elsewhere just how much creativity exists in the town. It’s a place with its own distinctive character, and 471 Records is keen to celebrate it.”

A Different Kind of Music Scene
What makes Events 471 particularly interesting is its commitment to building something bigger than individual artists or performances. In an industry where musicians are often encouraged to compete for attention, 471 is taking the opposite approach. Its artists collaborate rather than compete. They celebrate one another’s successes, appear on each other’s stages and contribute to projects that might not have happened without that collective support.
That collaborative spirit is helping to create a genuine sense of identity around the label. For audiences, it means that attending a 471 show is about more than simply watching a performer. It’s about becoming part of a growing community, discovering new musicians and supporting a scene that is developing right on their doorstep.
And with the organisation successfully bringing audiences together for increasingly ambitious productions, it is helping to challenge the idea that music fans must travel to Liverpool, Manchester or further afield to experience something special. There is plenty of talent in Birkenhead, and Events 471 is making sure people know about it.

The 471 ‘Not So’ Folk Orchestra: A Huge 2nd Birthday Event!
A second birthday celebration with a difference Perhaps the clearest indication of how far the label has come is its most ambitious collaborative project yet. To celebrate the second anniversary of 471 Records, the team has planned an extraordinary evening at the Liverpool Philharmonic Music Room on 16th January, bringing together every artist on the label for one huge musical celebration.
Introducing the 471 ‘Not So’ Folk Orchestra. Far from being a traditional folk concert, the production promises a rich and adventurous mix of musical styles, with large ensemble arrangements featuring drums, bass, guitars, keyboards, cello, violin and harp, accompanied by a full 471 choir. The concept is beautifully in keeping with the label’s community-driven ethos.
Carrick said: “We’re really excited about this groundbreaking show. Rather than each artist simply performing their own set, musicians will reinterpret one another’s songs, creating fresh arrangements and discovering new possibilities within familiar material. It’s a celebration of everything the label has been building: collaboration, creativity, friendship and a willingness to take risks.”
He continued: “For the artists, it represents an opportunity to be part of something on a scale that would be difficult to achieve individually. For audiences, it promises a unique evening showcasing the extraordinary range of talent emerging from the Wirral’s independent music community. And for Events 471, it is another example of the power of musicians working together.”

Putting Birkenhead on the Musical Map
At a time when grassroots music venues and independent artists face considerable challenges, the success of Events 471 offers a welcome reason for optimism. Its achievements demonstrate that with imagination, determination and a strong community behind them, local musicians can create ambitious productions, attract new audiences and build something meaningful without losing sight of where they came from.
The sold-out shows are impressive. The growing opportunities for artists are equally important. But perhaps the organisation’s greatest achievement is the sense of belonging it has created. It has helped turn a collection of individual musicians into a supportive creative family, one that is increasingly confident about taking its music to bigger stages.
As 471 Records approaches its next chapter, its ambitions are clear: more collaborations, more opportunities, more adventurous productions and more chances to show the wider world what Birkenhead has to offer. Because while 471 Records may have its sights set on bigger stages, its heart will always belong to Birkenhead. And judging by what the team has achieved so far, this could be just the beginning.
