Presented by Original Theatre and Reading Rep Theatre, this widely lauded revival of Micheál Mac Liammóir’s celebrated one-man play offers a poignant and captivating portrait of Oscar Wilde, brought vividly to life by Alastair Whatley and directed by Michael Fentiman.

Following a hit London run and glowing five-star reviews, the production invites audiences to step beyond the footlights and into Wilde’s private world. Set in the shadows of Reading Gaol, where Wilde was famously imprisoned, the play explores the loves and losses, triumphs and tragedies that shaped one of literature’s most enduring figures.

Blending biography with excerpts from Wilde’s best-loved works, the production draws on classics including An Ideal Husband, The Picture of Dorian Gray, The Importance of Being Earnest and The Ballad of Reading Gaol. The result is a richly layered tribute infused with Wilde’s trademark wit, wisdom and biting social observation.

Wilde’s celebrated epigrams are central to the evening’s charm, none more fitting than the line that frames the production: “Life is far too important a thing ever to talk seriously about.” Yet beneath the humour lies a moving exploration of the man behind the legend — the dazzling socialite, the devoted lover, the fallen outcast and ultimately the literary immortal.

Critics have hailed the production as “captivating,” “electrifying” and “an evening of unmissable magic,” while praising Whatley’s commanding solo performance. His interpretation of Wilde’s De Profundis has been singled out as especially powerful, balancing heartbreak with the comic brilliance that defined Wilde’s work.

Directed by Fentiman, known for acclaimed productions including Amélie, Jekyll & Hyde and The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, the show combines intimacy with theatrical flair. Produced by Olivier-nominated Original Theatre, it continues the company’s reputation for creating compelling and imaginative drama.
