Following the great success of its first year in 2019, Liverpool Hope University’s Angel Field Festival returns with an exciting line up of art, music, performance, film and workshops! From 6th — 14th February you can enjoy some breath taking performances at The Capstone Theatre and other venues and here we check out what’s on and when….

Thurs 6th Feb

On the opening night you can see Drift Chamber at 7pm at The Capstone Theatre — an amazing music collaboration between Lex Shellard and composer Joe Duddell who has worked with the likes of New Order and Elbow. Fascinating electronic and classical music and tickets are just £6.50!

At 8pm at The Warehouse Theatre check out The Hive: A New Opera. Combining violent real life crimes with magical realism; The Hive is a fascinating opera that shows a world in which forensic doctors, barristers and detectives meet Hansel, Gretel and Cinders in the other worldly forest of Arden. Fri 7th Feb

Refractive Pool has partnered with Liverpool Hope University to bring you a symposium that will explore aspects of Liverpool’s contemporary painting scene, through presentations from Liverpool based artists and a panel discussion, focusing on the experience of painters working in the city. From 9am and free to attend.

At 7.30pm at The Warehouse Theatre witness the spectacular Cabaret From The Shadows — an award winning kaleidoscope of dark comedy, satire and live music that will take you on a journey through a crazy hall of mirrors. Sat 8th Feb

From 10am at TATE Liverpool, check out The Work Of Art In The Post-Human Age. Join TATE Liverpool and Liverpool Hope University for a day-long symposium that considers new ways of thinking about the work of art in the post human age. Through a series of talks, conversations, discussion and debate, leading academics and theorists will address intriguing questions about art. Tickets just £5!

From 3pm at The Great Hall, experience the astonishing Pagoda Chinese Youth Orchestra — the first and largest Chinese Youth Orchestra in Europe! PCYO has adopted an experimental and somewhat audacious approach in its innovative music fusions with Folk Songs, Reggae, and Hip pop. Free admission!

From 7.30pm (pre talk at 6.45pm) at The Capstone Theatre, enjoy Classic Horizons from Liverpool Mozart Orchestra. The concert begins with a British composer from a bygone era, Lennox Berkeley. After the interval comes Mozart’s most famous symphony, No.40 — an absolute must for Mozart fans! At 3pm experience a fascinating play at The Warehouse Theatre called Give Us A Second. The audience is invited to follow the journey of four young men of differing backgrounds, Sam (Jacques Granier), Oscar (Oliver Preston), Jamie (Robert Hardman) and Teddy (Connor Newdick), all of whom are struggling to find their place in an abrasive modern society that allows for little masculine self-expression. Free admission!

Mon 10th Feb

A storytelling double bill from 7.30pm at The Capstone Theatre — Stilled Bones & Stuck. First enjoy the intriguing story of North Wales’ martyr, Saint Winnifred, via storytelling, Celtic song, Japanese dance and Cuban percussion. Following this, witness a powerful story about a dying old woman. Tickets just £6.50 for both performances.

Tues 11th Feb

At 1pm at The Capstone Theatre, enjoy a screening of the classic movie La Strada (1954). When Gelsomina (Giulietta Masina), a naïve young woman, is purchased from her impoverished mother by brutish circus strongman Zampanò (Anthony Quinn) to be his wife and partner, she loyally endures her husband’s coldness and abuse as they travel the Italian countryside performing together. Tickets £6.50.

At 3pm at The Warehouse Theatre see MAPS. Liverpool Hope University is delighted to present a thrilling and inspiring showcase of works by emerging artists, alumni of the MA Performance at Liverpool Hope University. This event celebrates performance as a multidisciplinary platform within which to explore the condition of being human in contemporary life and culture. Free to attend!

At 6pm at The Capstone Theatre it’s The Composer’s Symposium. In this concert, undergraduate students from Liverpool Hope University will be showcasing their original compositions, ranging in style from 18th century folk dances to modern harmony-cantered pieces. Free to attend!

In The Great Hall at 8pm, experience the amazing Pixels Ensemble! Pixels Ensemble’s programme reflects diverse composers’ expression of spirituality. From Bach’s late contrapuntal style, through Messiaen’s devoted use of birdsong to Gubaidulina‘s fiendishly virtuosic ‘Rejoice!’ Sonata; these iconic works are at the heart of their composers’ musical philosophy. A quality evening of music for just £11.50.

Weds 12th Feb

Henry V: The King’s Knickers (Or Made In England) will be shown at The Capstone Theatre at 7.30pm. Part history, part story-set, and part straight-up rant, The King’s Knickers wilfully picks at the fraying knicker elastic of national identity. After a sell-out premiere in 2019, The King’s Knickers asks what a mythic hero king – and really huge pants – can tell us about being English today.

Thurs 13th Feb

At 6pm at The Warehouse Theatre there’s a double bill of Stories Of The Firefly and Navarasa Mohana. The Stories of the Firefly brings together visuals, experimental storytelling and sound via the accordion. Navarasa Mohana consists of storytelling and live dance based on ancient Hindu texts. Just £6.50 for both shows.

At 8pm at The Capstone Theatre check out Figures In A Floating Landscape. Figures in a Floating Landscape is a dance, music, sonic soundscape performance from composer Peter Coyte and choreographer Dora Frankel featuring two musicians and four dancers. Tickets £12.

Fri 14th Feb

At 6.30pm at The Warehouse Theatre experience the unbelievable This Is Not A Magic Show by Vincent Gambini — a performance of and about sleight-of-hand magic: its invisible mechanics, its clichés, and what it tells us about live theatre and make-believe. In a conversational yet crafted approach, Gambini presents astonishing close-up magic that invites us to question how wonder is produced in a theatrical situation. Tickets just £6.50.

To conclude the festival there’s a huge night at The Capstone Theatre from 8pm — The Phil Shotton Big Band Valentine’s Day Concert. In high demand as a both a jazz soloist and musical director of jazz ensembles Phil will lead his swinging big band, featuring Corinne Andrew, through the most romantic of big band repertoire for this special Valentines concert! Tickets £11.50.

Last year’s Angel Field Festival was a great hit and this year is expected to be even bigger and better — with a quality line up of theatre, music, dance, storytelling, art, magic, workshops, talks and more. With something for everyone across Liverpool Hope University’s creative campus, it’s set to be one of the festivals of the year in Liverpool!
