A ‘Brilliant Rejects’ art exhibition is coming to New Brighton from 8th April to 10th May 2022. Salon Des Refuses is a showcase of local artists rejected by The Williamson Art Gallery’s Open Exhibition and will feature some stunning work courtesy of the collaboration between Rockpoint Leisure and Mersey Arts Zone.
The exhibition will be located between two venues — the old Natwest building on Victoria Road and Mersey Arts Zone in Vale Park. Art fans will be able to enjoy some beautiful pieces, from abstract art to paintings of the local area, with an opportunity to buy any they particularly admire.
The clever concept is a nod to Manet and Whistler’s rebellion in Paris in 1863. Fed up with always having their art rejected by the Academy due to its preference for old fashioned formal art, they set up their own exhibition — with Impressionism, Expressionism and Cubism inspired by their forward thinking.
Similar to that act of defiance, this New Brighton breakaway exhibition is a positive reaction from the rejected local artists. They do however support the Williamson Open, opening soon at The Williamson Art Gallery, and humbly congratulate those whose work was chosen to be on display.
Organiser Alex May said: “Our breakaway exhibition is our positive response to rejection. We were told that not been selected for the Williamson Open exhibition did not necessarily mean our works were inferior but it’s still disappointing, so we thought why not open our own in New Brighton?”
He continued: “Daniel Davies and the team at Rockpoint Leisure have made the Victoria Road area a real artistic hub and have brought it to life with street art so it’s very fitting to have it here. Dawn Reck is also doing great things to promote local art at Mersey Arts Zone in Vale Park so it’s another perfect venue to display our work.”
