DAVID BOWIE VERY MUCH ALIVE IN LIVERPOOL!

When there’s mention of tribute acts, there’s a tendency to cringe — images of second rate overweight Elvis impersonators spring to mind. That stigma was well and truly laid to rest at the O2 Academy in Liverpool when we witnessed the dazzling display that was Absolute Bowie — proving that David Bowie is still very much alive and that tribute acts play a vital role in immortalising such legends.

We attended the O2 Academy for Absolute Bowie on a Friday night and boy had we forgotten what a boss venue this is! The queueing up down a dark side street to get into a huge warehouse venue is part of the magic of going to a gig — idle small talk and giggles in anticipation of an electric performance ahead!

Once inside the O2 Academy, you realise what a fantastic venue it is. A proper live music venue with floors and rooms of top notch music filled with thousands of people after the same thing — spine tingling, sensational and spectacular entertainment! We were in and with the blue neon lights and atmosphere as intoxicating as our drinks, we were ready!

We made our way to the front via the side wall (a trick that’s served me well for over 17 years now) and braced ourselves for a David Bowie masterclass. From the outset, Absolute Bowie hit us with a lights flashing, drums crashing and guitar thrashing extravaganza — with the frontman not only acting and singing, but being Bowie in every sense of the word.

The show started off with a bang — an explosive glam rock introduction to what was to follow, with the frontman wearing a Chinese robe and singing China Girl like the hero himself! The versatility of the frontman and entire band was soon evident as we were quickly thrown into The Man Who Sold The World and Changes.

Just as Bowie was ever changing and demonstrated decadent diversity, Absolute Bowie kept us on our toes throughout and the packed O2 Academy clamoured to each and every belter pumped out in quick succession. We were treated to masks, blue leathers, cool suits and all sorts of flamboyant attire as the show developed with gusto!

A fast paced roller coaster showcasing one timeless hit after another, we enjoyed The Jean Genie, All The Young Dudes, Starman, Life On Mars, Fame, Heroes, Rebel Rebel and everything in between. There were blue guitars, stupidly good solos and a pulsating chemistry between bands members and the audience. On that night David Bowie was well and truly still alive and we were all heroes.

Here at La Vida Liverpool, we’re big fans of the O2 Academy and also of David Bowie — so what better night to attend the legendary Liverpool live music venue than this? An emphatic reminder that the O2 Academy is a vitally important part of our city’s music scene and tribute acts, when done right, are a crucial part of keeping legends like Bowie alive.
