Joe Gordon, from Speke, is one of Liverpool’s most exciting new playwrights, whose work comes from deep personal experience. Having suffered from social anxiety and low self esteem, Joe’s conditions became worse during lockdown — that is, until he sought refuge in writing his first ever theatre production.
Joe Said: “I have suffered from social anxiety and low self esteem from an early age and also experienced childhood bullying. When lockdowns hit my mental health issues got worse so I decided to write my first play. I subconsciously based the main character on myself and found writing the play very therapeutic in itself. Coming out and putting it on has been a big deal for me but I’ve really enjoyed it and I also act in it too!”

Joe presented the script to local grass roots theatre company, City Theatre. For the past six years, City Theatre has been championing local theatre — acting as a platform and springboard for upcoming local talent. Founder Barry Levy fell in love with the story and the powerful meaning behind it so decided to showcase it through the theatre production group.
The Killer’s Conscience is a modern day murder mystery exploring the very basis of human emotion, penned by a budding writer with a story to tell. With forward thinking young Director Carly Fisher and a team of talented local actors, the latest production from City Theatre is set to be one of the most enthralling grass roots productions of the post-Covid era.

Director Carly Fisher, who is also enjoying her debut, said: “This is my first time directing a production and I’m really excited about getting it out there! I’ve been retraining in theatre tech for the past 5 years and was a technician for Loft Theatre Company, winning a Swedish Fringe Festival award, so I have some great ideas to bring to the table. It’s going to be a great production!”
