GARSTON SNOOKER LEAGUE CELEBRATES 80 YEARS!
This year marks a remarkable milestone for Liverpool’s Garston & District Snooker League, as it celebrates 80 years of competitive play, camaraderie and community spirit. Established in 1946, the league has long been a cornerstone of grassroots snooker in Merseyside, nurturing talent, strengthening local ties and keeping the tradition of the game alive across generations.

From its early post-war beginnings to today’s thriving competition, the league has built a reputation not only for its longevity but also for the quality of players it has helped develop. Among its most notable alumni are John Parrott MBE and John Spencer — both of whom went on to become world champions and household names in the sport.
Their journeys from local league matches to the global stage serve as a testament to the league’s enduring importance in the snooker world. Notable former players also include Tony Rampello, who won the prestigious Pontins Open in 1990, and former Individual Champion Ian Brumby, who has won the Merseyside Champion Of Champions four times.

In its heyday the league had six divisions with more than eighty teams and over 700 registered players. Six players have won the Individual Championship on three occasions — M Riding, Tony Rampello, Mick Bethell, Eddie Tully, current champion Ian Weaver and Andy Molyneux, who has also recently captained the Merseyside A team winning the National County Championships on four occasions.

The late Billy Thorogood won the Championship an incredible ten times, a record that will surely never be broken. The league’s first maximum 147 break was achieved during the 1990/91 season by Graeme McDonald. The league also boasts to have the first professional referee from Liverpool in John Malone, while Colin Humphries continues to referee at the highest level around the world.

Today, the Garston Snooker League is home to nine competitive teams, with exciting growth on the horizon. The upcoming season in September will see the addition of three new teams, reflecting renewed interest in the sport at community level. Organisers are now actively encouraging more clubs — particularly from Central and South Liverpool — to join, with teams of five players or more invited to become part of the expanding league.

A Committee Spokesperson highlighted both the league’s proud history and its forward-thinking approach: “The Garston Snooker League has always been one of the most respected leagues on Merseyside, in recent years winning various Merseyside team and individual competitions.”
He continued: “In recent years we have set about helping teams and clubs to improve their facilities, including funding the re-covering of tables, buying high quality match balls and equipment etc. We are always looking at ways to improve and grow, whilst also anticipating the league growing with more teams looking to join our community next season. Clubs from anywhere in Central / South Liverpool area are welcome to join.”

The league’s commitment to reinvestment — supporting clubs with better equipment and improved playing conditions — has played a key role in its continued success. Backing from local sponsor Victor Huglin Carpets has further strengthened its ability to grow and evolve.

As part of its celebrations, the league is holding a special night at SAMH Club in Dingle, with fabulous live entertainment from the brilliant, internationally acclaimed artist Alison Daly, and a very special guest John Parrott MBE, a former player in the Garston Snooker League who became World Snooker Champion in 1991. John will be on hand for the evening’s award presentation which also includes a very special moment when many of the leagues’ former individual champions will be invited to the stage.
There’s another special day as part of this years 80th celebrations, taking place in the Spring — sixteen former individual champions taking part in a special Champion of Champions competition which takes place at George Scott’s Snooker Club in Liverpool on Sunday 17th May.

Beyond trophies and titles, the Garston Snooker League represents something deeper: the enduring value of grassroots sport in bringing people together. In local clubs across Liverpool, snooker tables serve as social hubs — places where friendships are formed, stories are shared and communities are strengthened.
In an increasingly fast-paced and digitally driven world, leagues like Garston’s provide a vital space for face-to-face interaction. Players of all ages and backgrounds come together with a shared passion, breaking down barriers and fostering a sense of belonging.
There is also growing recognition of the role grassroots sport plays in supporting mental health. Regular participation in activities like snooker can reduce stress, improve focus and offer a welcome escape from daily pressures. The social aspect — chatting between frames, supporting teammates and enjoying the atmosphere of local clubs — can be just as important as the game itself. For many, joining a league is not just about competition; it’s about connection.

Its message is clear: whether you’re an experienced player or a newcomer looking to get involved, there’s a place for you at the table.
