HEADLINERS ANNOUNCED FOR LIVERPOOL INTERNATIONAL JAZZ FESTIVAL

Liverpool International Jazz Festival returns this February and the first wave of artists have been announced! From Thurs 22nd Feb to Sun 25th Feb 2024, The Capstone Theatre will play host to some of the best local and international artists jazz has to offer! Tommy Smith & Gwilym Simcock Duo: Thurs 22nd Feb, 7.30pm

Tommy Smith and Gwilym Simcock collaborate to bring two generations of UK jazz mastery to the stage in world-class performances. Their intimate, intensely musical duets, with a repertoire drawn from many musical avenues, have delighted audiences at events across Scotland and the UK.

Tommy Smith, OBE is one of the world’s leading saxophonists and has worked with the likes of Chick Corea, Jaco Pastorius and Dame Cleo Laine to name a few. Meanwhile, Gwilym Simcock Gwilym Simcock has carved out a career as one of the most gifted pianists and imaginative composers on the European scene.

David Helbock Austrian Syndicate: Fri 23rd Feb, 7.30pm

This passion project by David Helbock, in which the „young lions“ of Austrian jazz meet one of the most sought-after sidemen in the international jazz scene of the past decades, captivates with plenty of percussion and groove, and most notably, with many keyboards and other keyboard instruments, in the spirit of Austria’s most successful jazz musician, Joe Zawinul.

In this joint project, Peter Madsen and David Helbock bring the best rhythm section that Austria has to offer in jazz on board for their “Austrian Syndicate.“ Raphael Preuschl and Herbert Pirker have been a well-rehearsed team for over 20 years and the most sought-after bass-drum duo in Vienna, and David Helbock has played hundreds of concerts worldwide with them as a trio.

MILAP Presents The Attuned Quartet: Sat 24th Feb, 1pm

This ambitious new line up of Attuned is striving to develop its own approach to Indian Classical fusion. Placing a strong emphasis on the compositional elements of their material as well as improvisational prowess, they are approaching fusion in a different way to most artists in the subgenre.

The Attuned Quartet will take audiences into a new understanding of what the potential of fusion really is and how this group is truly an ideal foundation for new forms of expression. Electric violin, electric guitar, tabla and cello combine to create melodic material based on Raags of North and South India, with Latin and jazz tradition influences.

Yolanda Charles Project pH Instra-mentals: Sat 24th Feb, 7.30pm

Yolanda Charles MBE, the internationally renowned bassist and songwriter, has worked with artists such as Hans Zimmer, Paul Weller, Robbie Williams, BB King, Eric Clapton, Roger Daltrey, Van Morrison, Mick Jagger and Michael Jackson in an exemplary career of thirty years and counting. 

Her Project pH Instra-mentals group features a diverse range of musical styles, their musical variety has drawn comparisons to Parliament/Funkadelic, Herbie Hancock’s Headhunters, Yes, and Return to Forever, as well as Jim Beard, Steps Ahead, John Scofield, and even the Mahavishnu Orchestra.

Denys Baptiste’s Late Trane: Sun 25th Feb, 7.30pm

The Late Trane is the powerful and commanding album and concert from British saxophonist Denys Baptiste, a giant of the UK jazz scene. Reimagining and reworking 10 carefully chosen compositions from John Coltrane’s late music (1963 -1967) with a fresh and modern new interpretation, The Late Trane perfectly balances Denys Baptiste’s unique artistic vision with the visceral emotions and cosmic references that encompasses Coltrane’s late music.

With Late Trane, Denys Baptiste has achieved something special and important. He has opened another rare window onto one of the greatest moments in jazz history. He’s made a beautiful and welcoming record that will guide others towards those late 60s Impulse masterworks.

The next incarnation of Liverpool International Jazz Festival will take place from Thurs 22nd Feb to Sun 25th Feb 2024 at Liverpool Hope University’s Capstone Theatre and will be the eleventh incarnation of the Festival.

The festival will include music from some of the most exciting figures in contemporary jazz including concerts by Tommy Smith & Gwilym Simcock, David Helbock’s Austrian Syndicate, Attuned Quartet, Yolanda Charles Project pH Instra-mentals and Denys Baptiste: Late Trane. Alongside this there will be a series of other events, to be announced, championing local artists.
