Liverpool Ju-Jitsu school owner, Sue King, has received the prestigious 8th degree black belt — one of the highest achievements in the sport — and in turn becoming one of the highest ranking female martial artists in the country. Founder of the Muga Mushin Ryu Ju-Jitsu school in Norris Green, Sue has been recognised not only for her combat but for her services to the sport.

Her martial arts club is celebrating 20 years, with a seminar later this year open to all grades and associations, and Sue has been working tirelessly behind the scenes to get young people off the streets and into the dojo. Over the years, Sue and her small team have trained literally thousands of children — teaching them discipline, respect and Eastern philosophies to help them through life.

Sue has helped improve the physical and mental wellbeing of countless adults and children through the art of Japanese Ju-Jitsu and her school, which is also a CIC, has various classes running Mon-Sat. Team Mushin has received countless 5 star reviews, with many parents stating how training there has been ‘game changing’ for their children, leading to widespread praise in the media.

Sue King is a Shihan, a dedicated Buddhist and has also served as the Regional Officer with UKBF in Liverpool. In addition to her incredible work on a local level, Sue has been acting as an ambassador for the sport by delivering talks and seminars both in the UK and internationally — inspiring people with her story whilst promoting the sport.

Sue explains: “I want to express my heartfelt thanks to Kenneth Culshaw Hanshi, John Greenhalgh Hanshi and to everyone who made this possible. I have never been one to chase grades or titles; for me, Jujitsu has always been, and remains, a lifelong study. After more than 40 years on the tatami, I’ve learned that rank is not a reward, it is a responsibility.”
She continues: “This grade carries great weight, not only in the belt itself, but in the commitment to continue studying, refining, and growing both on and off the tatami. To challenge myself, learn new skills, and remain a student of the art, no matter the colour around my waist.”

Sue has recently published her first book, The Warrior Monk Way — a handbook full of wisdom that gives people tools to live a wholesome and happy lives, whilst utilising Eastern philosophy to guide people through adversities. She already has two more books in the pipeline, yet despite everything going on her commitment to her school remains unwavering.

Sue summarises: “It is my duty to lead from the front, not with authority, but by example. To live the values we teach. To represent and showcase our Ryu with sincerity, honesty, and openness. To share knowledge without ego and to honour those who came before us through how we train, teach, and carry ourselves.”
She continues: “None of this happens alone. I have been incredibly fortunate to travel with Ken, to rekindle my friendship with Eric Marshall Sensei, and to share the tatami with instructors and students who continually inspire me. My heartfelt thanks to my Yudansha and training partners Sean, Ste and Jack, whose dedication, patience, and commitment keep me training, learning and grounded. Without their support, I would not be where I am today.”

Sue King’s Muga Mushin Ryu Ju-Jitsu school is located on Utting Avenue East, at the end of The Strand in Norris Green, and there’s capacity for a limited amount of new children and adult members. The school operates on a free trial basis for anyone interested for themselves or their children.
