The British Kebab Awards is one of the most prestigious culinary awards in the UK — hosted at Park Plaza in Westminster and championed by UK government, MPs, key hospitality industry leaders and journalists. This 13th year saw a number of Merseyside restaurants and takeaways nominated, with Masterchef Kemal and the team at Casa Rima triumphant in the fiercely contested Chef Of The Year category.

A lifelong Liverpool fan, Masterchef Kemal moved to the city in February 2020 following much success in London, working at multi award winning restaurants such as Marrakesh in Leicester Square and winning a ‘Best Foreign Chef In London’ award. Through his company, Private Delicacies, he has worked as a Consultant for the likes of Al Dente on Lark Lane and Christakis, and now with Halewood’s Casa Rima.

Kemal won the award in 2023 and travelled to London this time with Casa Rima colleagues Ali Kavlak (also an award winning chef), Ibrahim Coskuncay, Hasan Basanmay, Taylan Akan and La Vida Liverpool magazine’s Justin Hopper. The lavish event was attended by well over a thousand people and Kemal’s victory will be well received back home, such is his popularity amongst Liverpool diners.

Kemal has endeared himself to Scousers not only due to his culinary prowess, but also due to his wonderful nature. He has engaged in many community initiatives such as delivering meals to vulnerable people and teaching children how to cook at The Florrie. His recent awards and successes at The British Kebab Awards, International Gastronomy Star Awards and Culinary World Cup have cemented his status as a true legend.
