John, soon to be 40, explained: “I can’t begin to explain how much this means to me to be playing again and I’m going to make this one hell of a showcase. When I suffered a stroke that was caused by a blood clot on the brain and was rushed to hospital, I feared for the worst. The whole situation was terrifying and at times I worried I’d never play again, so I’m absolutely delighted to be back again in just 6 months!”

On 12th September 2023, the musician went to bed feeling great but woke up with no memory, visual loss and poor balance. A healthy and fit gym-goer and former personal trainer, this was a complete shock. After calling 111 and being advised it was probably a migraine, he stayed at home only for the symptoms to persist — before his girlfriend rushed him to hospital in a state of panic.

John said: “I had many tests and an MRI that showed a whole section of my brain wasn’t functioning. Naturally, you fear the worst. Would I be able to play music again, work out, live a good quality of life? After thorough investigations it showed I had a hole in my heart that caused two blood clots on the brain and ultimately a stroke.”

A true force of nature, John began his rehabilitation just two weeks after the stroke — playing chess and doing mental tests, going for walks and then eventually easing back into the gym. Slowly but surely, he began to get better and wrote a song for his girlfriend Molly who supported him throughout. Miraculously, he is putting on this big gig just 6 months later.

John summarised: “I still have a blind spot in my vision but other than that I feel great. I missed out on gigs abroad and great opportunities but I’m just so grateful to be here because if we’d have left it another day or two before going to hospital I might not have been here today. My girlfriend, family and friends have been amazing supporting me and it feels fantastic to be playing again. I’m going to make this the best gig ever!”
