When Wirral Animal Sanctuary was founded in November 2015, the original and main aim was to fundraise for a premises on the Wirral to help animals in need. Aspiring to something like Freshfields in Liverpool — a safe haven for all “unwanted” pets, possibly some farm animals and wildlife too. Unfortunately, as soon as Wirral Animal Sanctuary was founded, they became extremely busy. They were thrown into fostering, specifically fostering small animals and reptiles as many other rescues were unable to help.

They opened The Hog Centre as there were no other hedgehog rescues on the Wirral at that time. They’ve since treated hundreds of hedgehogs and expanded their Hog Centre to Larton Liveries in July 2018 due to outgrowing their original space. The Hog Centre has taken much of their time and resources over the last two years and as a result they’ve released hundreds of happy and healthy hedgehogs back into the wild. Now that The Hog Centre is settled, they have approved RSPCA status and they have incredible staff and volunteers to manage it, it’s time for them to re-focus on their original aim.

Wirral Animal Sanctuary have began fundraising to open a fully functional animal rescue with a large capacity for cats, a kennel block and outdoor exercise areas, a building for rodents, snakes, rabbits and other small animals and even a space for farm animals and wildlife. They currently turn away 4 to 5 animals per day due to not having somewhere safe for them and with the RSCPA and other shelters often at capacity, this is a heartbreaking issue.

Along their fundraising platform, Wirral Animal Sanctuary will also be applying for grants from various businesses and trusts towards the new premises. They will be holding fundraising events specifically for the premises and will soon have wishing wells in their shops and The Hog Centre for loose change to be donated, along with sponsored challenges and many other ideas in the pipeline.
