Here at La Vida Liverpool we’re big fans of theatre and creativity in our region. We’ve recently been taking a keen interest in the developments at The Hope Street Theatre — a place where grass roots theatre thrives in our city and ordinary people get the chance to do extraordinary things on stage. Here we bring you two fantastic shows we attended….

Merseyside Academy of Drama’s “Summer Season” is a two month part time course in acting that develops the skills required to act in a full scale production. At the end of the course, the budding actors showcase a grand production following their training from industry professionals. We attended two spectacular performances on two consecutive nights and we were thoroughly impressed!

Stepping Out….

On the first night we enjoyed the amusing Stepping Out. This comical production gave us a hilarious insight into the lives of people who attend an amateur tap dancing class. Throughout the performance we laughed at the hysterical interactions between the characters, as they haplessly attempt to become competent dancers.

It certainly didn’t feel like an amateur dramatic performance, as all actors bounced off each other effortlessly and their complex relationships enthralled us. The show was fun, energetic and sharp — finishing with the characters producing an impressive dance routine, taking us all by surprise as they were supposed to be inept! Top class stuff from brilliant new actors!

Napoli Millionaria….

WOW! What a show! This production had us completely engrossed from start to finish. Set in Naples during World War 2, this epic tale took us on a journey through the trials and tribulations of a family whose father is an honourable soldier and whose mother is a black market dealer. A gripping Italian wartime saga with so much going on!

The seemingly flawless performances from all actors left us baffled as to how this was merely a grass roots production! The captivating drama, the intriguing sequence of events and the ongoing battle between black market greed and the honour and morals of the father had us hanging on every word. Napoli Millionaria was powerful and dynamic and it would not be at all surprising if these actors go on to flourish.

Merseyside Academy of Drama is a wonderful project that enables people to get into acting and develop skills that they can transfer into everyday life. It’s about people of all ages and backgrounds blossoming into fine actors following expert guidance and training — and who knows where that may lead?!

MAD run a range of theatre based classes all year round and the courses are one evening per week for ten weeks. Merseyside Academy of Drama runs deeper than that though. It’s true that many of its graduates have gone on to become actors, but the real magic is in the self development and the skills people learn along the way — the valuable social and communication skills. There’s also magic in the friendships formed between the people involved.
