A powerful and thought-provoking play from a multi-award winning playwright is coming to Liverpool after sell-out shows around the UK. Windrush: The Betrayal is a Mark Grey masterpiece about the UK government’s mistreatment of the Windrush generation and it’s coming to The Capstone Theatre on 22nd and 23rd October.
The evocative and compelling production has been captivating audiences across the country and comes to Liverpool as part of Black History Month. Receiving high acclaim from countless media outlets, it tells the true story of how Teresa May’s ‘hostile environment’ policy harassed, arrested, detained and deported migrants of the Windrush generation.
With the aim of bullying people out of the UK who had been residents here for decades, the Home Office scandalously refused these people access to work, benefits, housing and healthcare in the country they had called home for over fifty years. Fortunately, the injustice was exposed by Guardian journalist Amelia Gentleman — who has also shown much praise for the play.
With spellbinding performances from a talented cast, Windrush: The Betrayal is emotional piece of work that highlights wrongdoings from governments, whilst championing justice and the power of the media to expose such scandals. Described as a ‘must see’ production, it promises a night of edge-of-the-seat theatre with drama, emotion and intensity.
Set to be one of the most dynamic shows at The Capstone Theatre of the Autumn/Winter season, Windrush: The Betrayal comes courtesy of playwright Mark Grey and Agape Theatre. Described as “one of London’s best kept secrets” by Kentish Times, Mark Grey has been making a big name for himself in London after a string of mesmerising sell-out productions.
Mark Grey said: “It’s an honour to bring this thought-provoking production to Liverpool for our debut appearance in the city. The people of Liverpool have themselves been subject to some scandals and mistreatment from the government and the city received a fair number of Windrush migrants, so I am sure it will resonate quite deeply.”
Windrush: The Betrayal comes to The Capstone Theatre on Shaw Street in Islington, just outside the city centre, on Saturday 22nd October at 7.30pm and Sunday 23rd October at 5pm. Tickets are £17.50 and are available via TicketQuarter.
