REVIEW: BEARDED THEORY FESTIVAL 2026

On a gloriously sunny May Bank Holiday weekend, the wonderful Bearded Theory festival returned to Catton Park in South Derbyshire for a five-day extravaganza of music, laughter and unforgettable memories. For us here at La Vida Liverpool, it was our first Bearded Theory experience and boy have we been missing out!

Set among ancient woodland, riverside meadows and sprawling parkland in the Derbyshire countryside, Bearded Theory has grown from a small independent gathering into one of the UK’s most beloved boutique festivals. Described as “a magical gathering of the good, the mad and the restless,” awards have included Best Small Festival, Best Family Festival and Best Line-Up at the UK Festival Awards.

This year’s festival featured another incredible line up including — Pixies, The Magic Numbers, Garbage, Everything Everything, Henge, Reverend And The Makers, The Horrors, Badly Drawn Boy, Skunk Anansie, Roni Size and many more! Representing excellent value, the festival costs around £255 for adults for the full Thursday-Sunday and either free or much cheaper for children depending on their age.

Having heard countless positive reviews from friends who have attended in previous years, my expectations were already high, however Bearded Theory didn’t just meet those expectations — it completely surpassed them. From the moment we arrived, it was clear why Bearded Theory has developed such a devoted following over the years.

The organisers have absolutely nailed the formula. The festival strikes the perfect balance between attracting major headline acts, showcasing alternative favourites and providing a platform for exciting emerging artists. It means there is genuinely something for everyone, while also offering countless opportunities to discover new music.

One of the festival’s greatest strengths is its size. It’s large enough to deliver the atmosphere and excitement of a major festival with 15,000 in attendance, yet intimate enough to avoid the frustrations often associated with larger events. There were no lengthy queues for bars or toilets, allowing people to spend more time enjoying themselves and less time waiting around.

The site itself was brilliantly laid out, featuring a diverse mix of stages and experiences. The impressive Pallet Main Stage hosted many of the festival’s biggest acts, while tented stages offered more intimate performances. The enchanting Woodland Stage provided a magical setting amongst the trees, and the iconic Big Ed giant head kept crowds dancing day and night with a stellar programme of DJs.

Everything felt incredibly well organised and accessible. Facilities were regularly cleaned, signposting was clear and navigating around the site was effortless. The food offering was equally impressive, with a fantastic variety catering to all tastes and dietary requirements, making it a truly family-friendly event.

As owner of La Vida Liverpool magazine, I attended alongside my good friends Rob and Dean, and together we enjoyed one of the most uplifting weekends we’ve experienced in years. We spent long days dancing in the sunshine, soaking up the music and embracing the wonderful atmosphere that Bearded Theory is renowned for.

There were countless musical highlights throughout the weekend. Outstanding DJ sets from Chris Liberator, Orbital’s Phil Hartnoll, Utah Saints and Graeme Park provided unforgettable moments on the dancefloor. Graeme Park’s Sunday afternoon set in particular delivered the perfect soundtrack to another beautiful day in the Derbyshire sunshine.

Saturday afternoon was especially memorable, with Henge, Warmduscher and Toots & The Maytals creating a magnificent run of performances on the main stage that perfectly set the tone for the rest of the day. Witnessing legendary old school acts such as Pixies, Senser and A Guy Called Gerald was another reminder of the quality and diversity of talent on offer throughout the festival.

Yet despite the incredible music, the biggest takeaway from the weekend wasn’t any individual performance — it was the people. Bearded Theory felt less like a festival and more like a temporary utopian village. Everywhere we went, people were friendly, welcoming and generous. There was a genuine sense of community and togetherness, with strangers looking out for one another and sharing in the collective experience.

In a world that can often feel increasingly divided, Bearded Theory offered a refreshing reminder of what can happen when people come together with kindness, openness and respect. The atmosphere was warm, inclusive and uplifting from start to finish. We met some truly amazing people and shared memories that will last long after the event.

Remarkably, despite partying for five days straight, we left feeling rejuvenated rather than exhausted. Our hearts and souls were full to the brim. The festival delivered not only fantastic entertainment but also a powerful sense of connection and positivity. If society was more like Bearded Theory, the world would undoubtedly be a better place.

The festival’s cult following continues to grow year after year, and after the resounding success of this year’s event it’s little surprise that early bird tickets for next year are already close to selling out. For those who have never experienced Bearded Theory before, take it from someone attending for the first time: put it on your bucket list. You’ll come for the music, but you’ll leave with so much more.
