HOW STREET ART TRANSFORMED NEW BRIGHTON IN 2019

During the past 12 months we’ve been documenting the transformation of New Brighton through street art. New Brighton’s exciting new ‘Victoria Quarter’ became the new home of La Vida Liverpool in early 2019 thanks to Rockpoint Leisure and since then we’ve been showcasing the area’s regeneration, notably the amazing street art.

Local businessman Daniel Davies and his Rockpoint Leisure team have breathed new life into the area — with beautiful colours and a new vibrancy about the place. Through the work of thoroughly talented local and international street artists, Victoria Road has been given a major makeover and is now a much talked about hot spot.

Such is the hype surrounding the street art and regeneration of the area, it has been covered far and wide in publications such as NME music magazine, The Telegraph and on BBC Radio. The attention has brought more footfall to the area which, in turn, has benefitted the local independents.

One of the first incredible pieces was that of The Harbour pub courtesy of local artist Adam Bresnen. Now dubbed ‘Wirral’s Most Colourful Pub’, it is covered in murals such as the giant mermaid, a pirate and a pirate ship. Soon after that, a large Martin Luther King mural was painted on the back on The Perch Rock pub — visible from Hope Street and unveiled on the anniversary of his death.

Following these great works of art came the beautiful Peter Pan of New Brighton masterpiece opposite The Bow Legged Beagle. With angels touching the sky above the old New Brighton with the pier and tower below, it’s symbolic of believing you can fly whilst giving a nod to the once thriving New Brighton.

Daniel Davies has always been very vocal about the decline of this seaside town — the place he was born and raised. From having the pier, the town, the ballroom, the largest swimming baths in the world and much more, it became a shadow of its former self, but with its new look and feel there’s a real hope for the future that’s felt deep within the community.

Continuing to add value to the fantastic independents, the Rockpoint Leisure team also commissioned a striking mural of Peggy Gadfly (a New Brighton legend) diving into water on the side of The New Brighton Hotel & Bar. This other work of local artist Adam Bresnen was accompanied by the tram piece at the back from UK artist Felix.

During the last 12 months we’ve seen the main road come alive with a giant abstract seaside piece, a retro piece from the highly regarded international artist Mr. Penfold and of course the big bear on the side of Oakland (where our office is). Daniel Davies and the team have also re-painted and replaced many of the independent shops’ signs and fronts.

If you look down a couple of the side streets you’ll discover the incredible piece of Otto — the Dotmaster piece of a giant young boy painting over a wall. You’ll also find the bright and bold ‘I See The Sea’ mural from Ben Eine — a top street artist who is good friends with Banksy and had work up in The White House.

One of the most documented pieces is The Beatles mural. This received a significant amount of media attention because of its meaning. It shows The Beatles running towards the old Tower Ballroom where they used to play and also the original posters from local legend and Brian Epstein’s right hand man, the late Tony Booth. The piece was unveiled by Tony’s widow and family 50 years after the ballroom burnt down and 100 years after the tower came down.

Another incredible thing about The Beatles piece is that the local kids were actively involved in the painting — passing down the heritage to the next generation. Opposite this powerful piece you’ll find the Black Pearl mural — a beautiful piece symbolic of the community built boat that has battled against nature and vandals — with a personal message from Jonnie Depp above it.

If you have a keen eye, you’ll also spot the pieces from Angry Dan on the side of The James Atherton and Habibi — two vibrant new venues in The Victoria Quarter. You’ll also find the incredible mural of a woman further up adjacent to Egerton Street courtesy of Mr. Cenz and the new piece in the old Co-Operative car park.

It’s been truly amazing to have our office in the heart of this thriving regeneration project and we owe Daniel Davies and Rockpoint Leisure for this great opportunity. It’s been so inspiring to see the area be transformed and to watch it come alive with colour, whilst artists, creatives and independents have thrived on the back of it. Here’s to a colourful and creative 2020, with more developments to follow.
