Liverpool’s oldest independent charity, The League Of Welldoers, has been serving the community since 1893 and continues to do great things despite a lack of funding. The charity, based on Limekilm Lane in Vauxhall, offers a wide range of services to maintain and improve quality of life for the people of Merseyside.

The League Of Welldoers receives no local or government funding and relies on annual memberships of just £12 per person and the generosity of donors. Despite that, it offers many things such as a community cafe, monthly bingo, concerts, weekly line dancing, trips away, chair based exercises, a ukulele club, craft classes and more. It also has a free snooker room and a boxing club that has produced many champions.

The charity, affectionately known as ‘The Lee Jones’ by many, was founded in 1893 to initially provide school meals to starving children throughout Liverpool, Everton & Bootle. After the introduction of the Welfare State in Britain in 1948, the charity evolved and the services to the local community became much more diverse.

Ran by legendary entertainer Tony Boase and a small team including some wonderful volunteers, today The League Of Welldoers bridges the gap and provides vital services to people who need it — despite no funding support. With a community cafe, a boxing club and lots of social activities, it plays a vital role in improving physical and mental health and combatting loneliness.

Tony said: “It really is a struggle staying afloat and making ends meets but we run a tight ship and we’re really passionate about what we do. The people who come through these doors are wonderful and it’s always a joy to see so many smiling faces in the community cafe and when we put on events. The day trips out are always fantastic, as are the regular concerts — including our big events at The Philharmonic.”

The trips away consist of coach trips to places such as Llandudno and Blackpool for a full day out that costs just £12 for members to enjoy a return trip. The regular concerts include top class artists, free refreshments and a free raffle and the big annual concerts at The Philharmonic have featured top acts such as Aser Murphy and Ricky Tomlinson.

The charity helps countless people each year and is a vital service for many people in the community. It has a strong history and has been used by ex Liverpool player Sammy Lee and boxer Joey Frost. Despite all this, it gets overlooked for funding due to it owning buildings and being asset rich in that sense.

Tony explained: “We absolutely love helping people and being that outlet for people who need to get out more. That will always come first and our budget and efforts are focused on that but there are so many things we would like if we had funding. We need to replace our outdated heating system that costs us a fortune and we’d love a refurb, but unless funders listen or someone generous comes along it’s all a pipe dream unfortunately.”
