HUGE SPOKEN WORD EVENTS COMING TO BIRKENHEAD!

Wirral’s immersive poetry night, Wordsmithery, is entering an exciting new chapter — and celebrating a major milestone along the way! After two hugely successful years at StartYard in Birkenhead, the much-loved monthly poetry and spoken word night is becoming even bigger and better — moving to FutureYard, Birkenhead’s leading grassroots music venue.

The move marks not only a new home, but Wordsmithery’s second birthday, which will be celebrated in style on Wednesday 18th February — with a seated set-up in FutureYard’s main room, the events will feature some of the best wordsmiths in the region alongside live music. Meanwhile, a very special Wordsmithery Presents event is taking place at StartYard on Saturday 7th March.

Sat 7th March: Wordsmithery Presents

In addition to the second birthday event a brand-new series, Wordsmithery Presents, launches with a special Saturday night show at StartYard! This intimate evening brings together two of Merseyside’s most respected acoustic artists, Danny Bradley and Hughzy, alongside poetry from Nicola Hardman of 471 Records.

Audiences can expect extended acoustic sets from Danny Bradley — an award-winning fingerstyle folk musician described by Americana UK as “less a one man band and more a one man orchestra” — and Hughzy, whose genre-defying sound blends pop, blues, jazz and country into something uniquely his own. The evening is rounded out by a special poetry-only set from Nicola Hardman, a familiar and much-loved presence at StartYard.

Run by local promoters Events 471 and hosted by poet and organiser Alison Schultz, Wordsmithery has become a cornerstone of Wirral’s spoken word scene. Over the past two years, it has showcased hundreds of poets, musicians and songwriters, building a reputation for being inclusive, welcoming and fiercely supportive of both established artists and first-time performers.

The move to FutureYard’s live room brings a fully seated setup, while keeping everything audiences love: the same monthly format, the same team, the same host — and, of course, the same warm, loyal community that has made Wordsmithery feel like home. Each month blends carefully curated guest slots with open-floor performances, ensuring there’s always space for new voices to step up alongside seasoned wordsmiths.

Meanwhile, host and poet Alison Schultz has recently been appointed Poet In Residence for Wirral Libraries — a hugely significant and well-deserved achievement. In this new role, Alison will be bringing workshops, events and creative opportunities across the borough, drawing on her endless energy, connections and unmistakable pizazz to make poetry accessible to all.

It’s another sign of how deeply Wordsmithery is woven into the cultural life of the Wirral — not just as an event, but as a creative movement. Two years in, it remains a place where voices are heard, stories are shared, and community comes first. And as it steps into its third year, Wordsmithery is proving that the Wirral’s poetry scene is not just alive — it’s thriving.
