Soon to celebrate their 5th birthday, Moonfrog have been putting on some incredible gigs featuring a wide range of international subculture music.

From Icelandic darkwave outfits, post-punk bands from the U.S, French electronic artists to everything in between, Moonfrog has been introducing Liverpool music afficionados to a plethora of alternative acts from across the globe. Hosting super affordable nights at cool venues such as The Kazimier Stockroom and Quarry, Moonfrog are doing things differently for sure.

The aim of Moonfrog is to bridge the gap and link Liverpool up with some of the most talented alternative acts from across the globe. Artists and bands from as far afield as the U.S, Canada, Mexico and throughout Europe are given the chance to perform in the UK’s iconic music city, whilst local artists get the chance to support top international acts.

Moonfrog gigs are typically intimate and atmospheric — with a feeling as if you’ve stepped into a new realm. For some it’s a rare opportunity to enjoy their genre of choice in Liverpool, for others it’s about discovering something completely new for the first time and for everyone it’s a chance to make new friends in an inclusive, judgement-free environment.

Moonfrog’s Founder, Mikey Coates, said: “Moonfrog was inspired by my desire to see the bands I like come to Liverpool and to meet new like-minded people. I’ve definitely done that over the last 5 years and I’m looking forward to the next 5 years. There are some great promoters and venues working hard in this city and it’s been great working alongside them to bring some brilliants artists to the city.”
He continued: “The feedback for our nights has been amazing. Many people have thanked us for putting on their favourite kind of music locally and others have loved experiencing something completely different. For me, it’s all about the music, sharing the experience with other people and being that link between Liverpool and the wider music world.”

Moonfrog’s Fatsoma page showcases upcoming events and allows people to watch videos of the artists so that they can get a feel for what to expect on the night. Artists being featured in November 2023 include Belgium’s Brorlad (psychedelic gabber punk), Los Angeles & Bologna-based Nuovo Testamento (Italo disco) and Los Angeles based Spike Hellis (hard dance) — with tickets just £10.

Mikey said: “At a Moonfrog gig you are likely to catch up and coming and exciting international artists playing alongside the best of local artists. Moonfrog nights are definitely a vibe and I always encourage people to step outside their comfort zone and try something new. The atmosphere is always friendly.”
He continued: “The community has grown beautifully over the past 5 years and people have become the best of friends after meeting at one of our gigs. Some have gone on to start bands of their own and then ended up playing at a Moonfrog event. What we’ve created is really special.”

Mikey’s own band, Liminal Project, sometimes support the guest international artists and they themselves are pioneering trailblazers of the local music scene. A dreamy, dark-wave trio with rhythmic basslines and trippy vocals — they too are doing things differently and have become beneficiaries of the Moonfrog subculture movement.

Mikey summarised: “It’s been an amazing 5 years of Moonfrog and so many friendships have been made. We’ve hosted such a wide range of top acts from all over the world and brought so many genres to the city — punk, post punk, electronic, goth, dark wave, grunge, you name it. All I’ll say to people is give something new a try and broaden your horizons — you may discover your favourite new band!”
