Liverpool’s guitar maestro, Neil Campbell, put on another masterclass alongside his crew of musicians — this time in the basement of Jimmy’s on Bold Street on Sunday 5th June 2022. The third time we’ve been to a Neil Campbell showcase this year, it’s the gift that keeps on giving from one of the finest guitar players to emerge from Liverpool.

Neil Campbell himself has done some great things. Receiving critical acclaim from the likes of BBC Radio 6 Music, Liverpool Noise, Classic Guitar Magazine and YES, he draws on elements of contemporary classical, progressive, jazz and other musical styles — developing a formidable reputation as one of our region’s most talented artists.

Although we’ve seen Neil on a fair few occasions now, It was great to finally attend a gig at Jimmy’s — a venue that hast fast become one of Merseyside’s most vibrant venues, with it’s top sound system in the basement and cool lighting. The stage was perfect for a multi sensory music extravaganza from one of the region’s most talented music collectives.

As with the last event we attended, we enjoyed a captivating evening — starting with the beautiful collaboration between Neil’s guitar and Una Quinn’ haunting vocals and followed by Neil’s After The Flood Quartet. The latter is a finely tuned four piece featuring Neil, Marty Snape (Mighty Zeb/Bulbs/The Hat Band), Roger Gardiner (Dead Poppies) on Overwater bass and Norwegian ace Viktor Nordberg on drums.

The audience included the ever present following that Neil attracts — the enthusiastic music aficionados who appreciate quality music when they hear it and follow Neil & Co. around to all their gigs. It’s always a joy attending Neil’s events, as you know everyone will always be not only sound but switched on when it comes to good music and talented musicians.

During the first half of the gig we were graved by Neil’s guitar mastery and loop skills alongside the incredible voice of Una Quinn. With powerful songs about politics and emotive subjects, her hard hitting lyrics and profound words — akin to the likes of Morcheeba and Portishead — were complimented wonderfully by the ebbs and flows of Neil grace on the guitar.

The second half of the show was all about the After The Flood Quartet, who are by now a well oiled and refined machine. As with our other experiences of this dynamic foursome, they took us on a musical journey — with tracks from the band’s 2018 debut eponymous album and also from Neil Campbell’s recent 2021 Klee Music release The Great Escape. At times subtle and at others wild and energetic, it’s always a mind blowing extravaganza seeing them.
