The three-year Illustration with Animation Degree course covers a range of illustration and animation disciplines in the first year, before students hone in on their specialism in years two and three. The BA Hons course takes place over three days per week between September and June for three years, ideal for studying alongside a part-time job, and a student loan is available to those who qualify for one.
Based at state-of-the-art design studios at the Birkenhead college, the creative course can lead to a successful career in illustration, graphic design, art or animation, to name a few. With a blend of lectures, seminars, regular one to one tutorial sessions, briefings, reviews and critiques delivered by a team of creative academic staff, it’s a fascinating and diverse course.

Before students go on to focus on their specialism, whether that be art, illustration, graphic design or animation, the first year covers an enthralling mix of subjects. From the history and theory of art to life drawing and external visits, it’s a great opportunity to broaden your knowledge and skills before choosing your preferred discipline to complete your Degree with.

Programme Leader Johanna Wilson said: “The beauty of this course is its diversity and you can develop some new artistic skills in addition to your specialist area. The courses are intimate, with around 10 students each term, and we’ve had some amazing success stories — with students going on to enjoy their dream creative careers in art, illustration, graphic design, branding, animation and more.”

As part of their Degree course, current students are about to host a huge three week exhibition of art and photography at The Liver Building from Friday 10th May 2024. Meanwhile, other students are hosting a unique ‘Town Is Gallery’ open air exhibition on Friday 22nd March from 4pm until late at the (old) M&S in Birkenhead Town Centre.
Graduate Hazel Lawton said: “Before I joined this course, animation was just a dream to me and I had no idea how to go about learning the basic steps or how to get or use most software you need to be an animator. This course has helped me become closer to my dream and I feel lucky to have been part of it.”

The course is open to anyone over 19 who has 5 GCSEs at Grade 9-4 or A*-C. Applications are welcome from mature students, who may lack qualifications but can demonstrate their suitability to study at this level, and there have been students on the course as old as 78. The Degree is validated by University Of Chester and costs £8340 per year, with student loans available and courses fully funded in some cases.

The course is smaller in terms of cohorts so learners get added one to one support on projects — meaning that they get the very best from the teachers. They cater to a lot of different learning needs, so people from various different walks of life are welcomed to apply.
