A big fundraiser gig is taking place at The Ship Hotel in New Brighton on Saturday 16th July 2022 from 7pm. The night is in memory of local musician and animal lover, Paul Lewis, who recent passed away — with proceeds going to the newly founded ‘Paul Lewis Animal Welfare Trust’ charity.

The night will feature some incredible live music from Anthony Usher, The Deloreans and Soul Shack, with a huge memorabilia auction and surprise appearances from local celebrities. There will also be limited edition CDs on sale of a re-released album from The Groove Project — a band formed by Paul Bruce, Berkitt Manning, Dave Atkins and the late Paul Lewis back in 2003 — and the band will be playing as the reformed ‘Back To Back’.

The Paul Lewis Animal Welfare Trust was recently founded by Paul Bruce in order to commemorate his life long friend whilst giving something back. Paul Lewis was an advocate of animal welfare and would rescue dogs from other countries, as well as being a very talented bass player, so the idea of raising money for animals through music was a natural thing to do for Paul Bruce.

Paul Bruce said: “Paul Lewis was a remarkable man. So well respected on the local music scene and always behind good causes. He died in 2021 and left a large void in our lives, so a few of us talked about setting something up in his name. We created The Paul Lewis Animal Welfare Trust to raise money for animals through fundraising activities and music sure enough came into it.”

He continued: “We’re doing a big sponsored walk on Sunday 10th July and then the big fundraising music event at The Ship Hotel on Saturday 16th July. There’s going to be some great bands and a chance to win some great prizes on so it’s well worth coming down. To re-release our 2days2nights album as a special edition is a very touching thing to do in his memory and again it will be raising money for animals through music.”

The re-released 2days2nights album from The Groove Project is a blend of funk, rock and soul, with some funky Red Hot Chili Peppers style riffs and basslines, and showcases the thoroughly talented foursome for the first time in many years. The charity re-launch of the album is hailed as an extremely fitting tribute by the band, particularly as it will be raising money for a cause Paul loved so much.

Paul Bruce summarised: “It brings back so many memories listening to the album again after so many years. It brings about tears of joy listening to the great music we created but also tears of sadness listening to Paul’s bass and realising he’s no longer with us. We’ll be selling the album at the event on Saturday 16th July and the live music on display will be top notch. It’s going to be a wonderful yet emotional night.”
