Lindsay Hudson is the owner of The Vintage Interior Fairy — a furniture restoration, antiques and coffee shop on Seabank Road in New Brighton. After getting the upcycling bug some years ago, she now hosts workshops to help others learn the art of furniture restoration — as well as offering full restoration services and selling ‘saved’ furniture and antiques from her shop.

Lindsay is one of the only local stockists of ‘Frenchic’ — the specialist furniture paint that can turn unwanted scrap into amazing works of art. The Vintage Interior Fairy offers fun workshops where people can bring an old piece of furniture and learn how to restore it (cost just £65, Frenchic paint and materials supplied).

Lindsay’s workshops have become more and more popular, with many people turning to upcycling both as a hobby and as a primary or secondary business. She also offers a full restoration service, where she can restore an entire kitchen or a house exterior, for example, and save people thousands of pounds in the process.

Lindsay explained: “My grandfather was an upholsterer and my father was into antiques so even as a child I was fascinated by how furniture and how it can be saved. I moved to London in my 20s and after restoring a Victorian bamboo shelf I found in a skip, I was officially hooked!”

She continued: “I’ve lost count of how many pieces of furniture I’ve saved over the years but it’s so satisfying! The whole process is a form of mindfulness and great for mental health — it’s so good on so many levels! It’s a fab hobby but you can both save money and make money by doing it, whilst also saving furniture from landfill. It really is a no-brainer!”

Amanda said: “Spent a lovely couple of hours learning crackle and decoupage with like minded people. Very relaxed, informative and oddly therapeutic! Lindsay was so knowledgeable and lovely, will definitely be signing up to more classes in the near future. Highly recommended!”

Carla said: “Went on a furniture painting course with Lyndsay. Absolute fantastic day. Lyndsay is so knowledgeable and her love for upscaling is inspirational. Before the course I never would of had the nerve to try painting anything. Now you can’t get a paint brush out my hand. Thanks so much Lyndsay!”

Things such as Covid and lockdowns, the cost of living and furniture prices have seen more and more people take up furniture restoration as a hobby or business. For those who want to leave it to the expert, Lindsay’s business of restoring other people’s furniture has also got more and more popular.

Mieke said: “We asked for our furniture to be sprayed a light grey colour to make it look more modern for our little boy’s bedroom! Lindsay was so helpful helping us choose the right colour – Frenchic Swanky Pants. Incredibly happy and has transformed our furniture! THANK YOU!”

The Vintage Interior Fairy has countless 5 star reviews from people who have been on the masterclasses, used Lindsay for the restoration services, bought furniture or simply popped in for a coffee. A gem on Seabank Road, The Vintage Interior Fairy is an Aladdin’s cave of all things vintage and chic.

Lindsay summarised: “Most people don’t know I’m here and certainly lots of people don’t consider furniture restoration. More and more people are getting into it though and it really is a no-brainer — you can save thousands of pounds and make thousands of pounds, whilst it’s great for mental health and the environment.”
