A very special concert is coming to The Capstone Theatre in Liverpool on Friday 1st December, in celebration of Gavin Bryars’ 80th birthday. Serbian piano ensemble, Ensemble for Different New Music, will be performing his compositions — with a guest performance from Bryars himself — in what promises to be a beautiful evening of music.

The special occasion will be the first time the acclaimed Serbian outfit will have performed in the UK and the event will serve as a unique portrait of one the most important composers of our time. Like so many, Ensemble for Different New Music have been greatly inspired by the legendary musician and composer and there will be a guest performance from him on the night.

Carefully curated as a celebratory concert, the programme highlights the performers’ favourite pieces, a selection of compositions written across a span of over 40 years dating back to the 1970s. It aims to show the incredible versatility and enduring quality of Bryars’ piano works, whilst there will also be a Q&A with Bryars at the end of the concert.

The concert will include a performance for four keyboards of a new arrangement of the rarely performed piece White’s SS and a performance of a new four keyboard arrangement of My First Homage. The audience will be be treated to Bryars joining the members of the ensemble in a performance of his 1977 composition Out of Zaleski’s Gazebo, whilst the Q&A will be undoubtedly enlightening.
The Capstone Theatre’s Creative Director, Neil Campbell, said: “To have someone of Bryars’ stature appearing at our theatre for his 80th birthday is a great honour and it is also wonderful to host Ensemble for Different New Music for their first ever UK performance. It will be a very special evening of music indeed and once to savour.”
