Born in Eket, Nigeria, Camilla George has been interested in music from an early age and particularly in the fusion of African and Western music. Camilla went on to study with many jazz greats such as saxophone giant Jean Toussaint (of Art Blakey fame), Julian Siegal and Martin Speake at Trinity College of Music.

On the night we were treated to an array of the band’s forward thinking jazz fusion tracks about important historical Nigerian subjects such as slavery and Camilla’s Grandfather’s ‘secret society’. Camilla’s prowess on the saxophone was extremely powerful and her band, Daniel Casimir (bass), Rod Youngs (drums) and Andrew McCormack (piano), were all in exceptional form — with some extravagant solos throughout the evening.

With groovy basslines, enigmatic ivy fingering and soulful saxophone singing, it was the finest live jazz performance we have witnessed here at La Vida Liverpool. Indeed, the night was testament to the quality that Liverpool International Jazz Festival showcases every year at the majestic Capstone Theatre.
