In this regular feature, we bring you our Pub Of The Quarter and for December 2023 we’ve chosen The Ship Inn, Hoylake! Dynamic couple Loz and Vic have completely transformed The Ship since ‘taking the helm’ back in 2020 and today it offers top quality food, live music, Irish jam sessions, live sport, a quiz, artisan markets, community events and more!

Fantastic Food!
The Ship offers some of the best pub food around 7 days a week and the latest menu is packed with hearty winter warmers such as locally sourced fish and handcut chips, award winning Pieminster pies, slowroast gammon in clementine and ginger and quality steaks from Scott’s. Their Hoylake Fisheries Seafood Chowder is epic and comes with king prawns, salmon, cod and mussels with crusty bread.
The Ship is all about using fresh ingredients from local suppliers and Mon-Thurs 12-9pm they offer 2 main courses for £25. On Sundays, their ‘Sunday Social’ most often sells out — featuring their divine roasts and legendary Sunday Roast Sharers with trimmings such as pigs in blankets and honey and wholegrain parsnips.

Music, Markets & More!
The Ship puts on the best artists and bands in the region every Friday and Saturday night and The Coral, Nigel Clark of Dodgy make appearances alongside top local cover acts. Loz and Vic have transformed the carpark into a large outdoor area that hosts artisan markets on the last weekend of every month and huge events in the summer. Meanwhile, there’s a gem of a beer garden to the rear.
The artisan markets on the last weekend of every month are always very popular — with a wide range of local independent traders selling their delights. Dates announced for 2024 are Sat 23rd March, Sat 27th April, Sat 25th May, Sat 22nd June, Sat 27th July, Sat 24th Aug, Sat 28th Sept, Sat 26th Oct and Sat 23rd Nov.

More Than Just A Pub….
Whilst remaining very humble, Loz and Vic have done many things for charity and local causes and The Ship is very much a community hub. During lockdowns they delivered up to 80 free meals per day to vulnerable members of the community, raised thousands for foodbanks by giving away good beer that couldn’t be sold and raised money for Built Care Packs for keyworkers through their online festival.
Although it’s not something they like to shout about, Loz has previously been shortlisted for Licensee Of The Year by The Publican and accredited with Beautiful Beer Gold Award, whilst Vic has won an award for Most Inspirational Female In Liverpool for International Women’s Day. Over the years, the couple have raised tens of thousands of pounds for good causes through their pubs.

Check Out The Sister Pub….
Local legends Loz and Vic have also transformed another Hoylake pub. Situated off the beaten track on Lake Place, The Lake is a traditional pub oozing with character that has live music, jam nights, quiz nights, live sport and a great atmosphere. If you’re looking for a fine pint and a great night out in Hoylake, The Lake is an absolute gem too!

Here at La Vida Liverpool, we love pubs that tick all the boxes — great food and drink, live music, events, character, a great atmosphere and a community ethos.
