LIVERPOOL INTERNATIONAL JAZZ FESTIVAL: EVERY SHOW FOR JUST £60!

Liverpool International Jazz Festival is BACK for 2024 and jazz fanatics can enjoy every show for just £60! Spanning four days from Thursday 22nd to Sunday 25th February, festival goers can experience no less than eight events for just £60 — representing incredible value for money and ideal for a Christmas present!

The four day jazz extravaganza, hosted by The Capstone Theatre and Liverpool Hope University’s creative campus, is in its eleventh year and features a fusion of top local and international talent. This year’s festival will be as diverse as ever — bringing saxophonists, the best Austrian talent, Indian classical fusion and everything in between.

The festival will include music from some of the most exciting figures in contemporary jazz including concerts by Tommy Smith & Gwilym Simcock, David Helbock’s Austrian Syndicate, Attuned Quartet, Yolanda Charles Project pH Instra-mentals and Denys Baptiste: Late Trane.

During the four days, there will also be an afternoon performance from Liverpool Hope University’s Big Band, a Mutant Jazz afterparty at Metrocola, a huge Celebration event featuring an array of local talent, a Cali Discs DJ event at The Caledonia and Liverpool Sax Day.

The festival kicks off on Thursday 22nd February with Tommy Smith and Gwilym Simcock at 7.30pm at The Capstone Theatre. Tommy Smith, OBE is one of the world’s leading saxophonists and has worked with the likes of Chick Corea, Jaco Pastorius and Dame Cleo Laine. Meanwhile, Gwilym Simcock has carved out a career as one of the most gifted pianists and imaginative composers on the European scene.

Friday afternoon at 1pm will see Liverpool Hope University’s Big Band perform Carla Bley at The Capstone Theatre, followed by David Helbock Austrian Syndicate at 7.30pm. In this joint project, Peter Madsen and David Helbock bring the best rhythm section that Austria has to offer in jazz on board for their “Austrian Syndicate.“ This is then followed by an afterparty at Metrocola.

Saturday afternoon will see two huge performances at The Capstone Theatre and The Cornerstone Theatre respectively. Milap and LIJF present The Attuned Quartet — melodic material based on Raags of North and South India, with Latin and jazz tradition influences — meanwhile the Celebration event will feature some incredible local artists.

On Saturday night The Capstone Theatre will host Yolanda Charles MBE. The internationally renowned bassist and songwriter has worked with artists such as Hans Zimmer, Paul Weller, Robbie Williams, BB King, Eric Clapton, Van Morrison, Mick Jagger and Michael Jackson in an exemplary career of thirty years and counting. Following this, head over to The Caledonia pub for the Cali Discs DJ showcase.

The final day will consist of Liverpool Sax Day at The Cornerstone Building — a day-long event featuring workshops, masterclasses, trade stalls and performances. Finally, The Late Trane on Sunday evening is the powerful and commanding album and concert from British saxophonist Denys Baptiste, a giant of the UK jazz scene, reimagining and reworking John Coltrane’s late music with a fresh new interpretation.
