After so much uncertainty it’s now official — Liverpool International Jazz Festival is BACK! From 24th — 27th February 2022, the majestic Capstone Theatre will play host to Duology, John Law’s Congregation, Zoe & Idris Rahman with Sohini Alam, Camilla George Band and Xhosa Cole Trio, with Liverpool Sax Day also in the programme.

Liverpool International Jazz Festival was established in 2013 by Liverpool Hope University and has attracted some of the most revered names in international jazz — including the likes of Courtney Pine, Darius Brubeck and Denys Baptiste. After some time out due to restrictions, the incredible jazz extravaganza returns with a bang!

Thurs 24th Feb / 7.30pm / Capstone Theatre / Duology

Featuring Tim Garland on tenor, soprano and sopranino saxophone and bass clarinet, with Jason Rebello on piano, this acoustic duo is a testament to a long lasting friendship and pursuit of musical depth, humour, soulful melancholy and exhilaration. Along with several brand new works from both artists are stunning renditions of timeless jazz classics they grew up with.

In over thirty years of friendship they have toured, shared and recorded music which has spurred their artistic growth as separate artists and as band members. Now it is time to focus this long-honed rapport in a series of duet recordings entitled Duology.

John Law, 2020 winner of the prestigious Paul Hamlyn Foundation Award for Artists, brings together, in his Congregation three outstanding young musicians from the world of contemporary jazz, each of them highly skilled in many musical genres.

Featuring the young musician James Mainwaring, from Mercury Prize jazz winners and European Jazz Competition finalists Roller Trio, Philharmonic Young Composer Ashley John Long and in-demand and sought-after jazz drummer Dave Hamblett. A Quartet that’s oozing with talent!

Sat 26th Feb / 2pm / Capstone Theatre / Zoe & Idris Rahman with Sohini Alam

Milapfest and LIJF presents a special collaboration between a jazz pianist/composer Zoe Rahman, her brother, Idris Rahman, on clarinet and British Bengali vocalist Sohini Alam, marking 50 years since the independence of Bangladesh.

Alongside new arrangements of music by Nazrul and Tagore, the musicians will also be performing music from Zoe’s Where Rivers Meet album, described in The Sunday Times as “a wholly original brand of Anglo-Asian music”. A spinetingling cultural showcase that promises to dazzle the audience!

Sat 26th Feb / 7.30pm / Capstone Theatre / Camilla George Band

Born in Eket, Nigeria, Camilla George has been interested in music from an early age and particularly in the fusion of African and Western music. Camilla went on to study with many jazz greats such as saxophone giant Jean Toussaint (of Art Blakey fame), Julian Siegal and Martin Speake at Trinity College of Music.

In 2014 Camilla formed her own critically acclaimed band showcasing the stars of the new UK Jazz Scene. Dubbed “The Golden Girl of Jazz” by The Evening Standard, Camilla’s debut album, Isang (pronounced E-SANG which means journey in Ibibio her native language) received huge critical acclaim.

Sun 27th Feb / 11am / Cornerstone Building / Liverpool Sax Day

Liverpool Sax Day returns in 2022 and is a must for ALL sax players! The day long event features workshops and masterclasses from BBC’s Young Jazz Musician of the year 2018 and rising UK sax star Xhosa Cole, plus the North’s leading jazz tenor man Dean Masser.

Bring your sax and join in the ensemble classes hosted by prolific International sax expert and composer Andy Scott, and also peruse and try out all the latest sax models and paraphernalia at the many trade stalls. if you’re a sax player or fan this is an absolute must!

Sun 27th Feb / 7.30pm / Capstone Theatre / Xhosa Cole Trio

Winner of the 2018 BBC Young Jazz Musician of the year, Xhosa Cole is an embodiment of the success of numerous community arts programmes in Birmingham including the Midland Youth Jazz Orchestra, Jazzlines Ensemble and Birmingham Music Service. Xhosa has performed twice at the BBC Proms and also received the Parliamentary Jazz Award for ‘Best Newcomer’ in 2019 and Jazz FM ‘Breakthrough act of the year’.

Joining Xhosa Cole is James Owston — a Birmingham based double bassist, composer, educator and a highly active member of the UK jazz scene — and highly acclaimed drummer and composer, Jim Bashford. A spectacular finale to the festival and a night that promises to deliver a night of jazz like no other!

Here at La Vida Liverpool, we’re huge fans of The Capstone Theatre and it’s great to see the majestic venue back with an exciting and diverse programme of entertainment for 2022.
