LVL: For those who don’t know, what’s loop music all about?

John: Using the loop station (rc300) combined with multiple instruments and FX, allows me to create layers of sound.  Prior to looping I used to just play guitar and sing, I can now play, guitar, bass, drums (beatbox) and perform my own backing vocals, creating the sound of a full band live and in the moment. Check out the demo below from the guy who inspired me to start….

LVL: What’s your music background and how did you get into loop music?

John: I have always been influenced by musicians, mainly my Father who has since before I was born, performed in bands, theatre production and various acts.  Growing up our house was always full of musicians and artistic people, growing up was an ongoing jam session.

I started performing from a young age in various bands and amateur dramatics. For a brief period I joined my Dad’s tribute act to the Beatles “Made In Liverpool”, playing the part of George Harrison, it was an excellent experience however I wanted to perform solo and left the group to pursue that avenue.

I stumbled into the above video by Randolf Arriola and as soon as he accepted my friend request I was quick to pick his brains, he was more than happy to offer me advice. My loop rig has been a work in progress over the years…. pics to follow…. my rig now comprises of, Boss RC300, Roland gr55 guitar synth and a Digitech vocalist Live 3. It is all set up and ready to go fitted inside a rifle case.

LVL: What are your favourite songs to perform?

John: I love anything Funk influenced, old school Disco.  I am a huge fan of Chic and in particular Nile Rodgers style of playing guitar, with that being said, Good Times by Chic (which I mash with several other songs), Get Lucky by Daft Punk (Nile Rodgers played Guitar) and a song by The Doobie Brothers called Long Train Running.

There are many and I’d say anything that makes people want to dance and get involved. Audiences seem to really like my rendition of What’s Up by Four Non Blondes, it always goes down very well.

LVL: What songs would you like to learn?

John: Play That Funky Music White Boy by Wild Cherry. Give It Up by KC & The Sunshine Band. Freak Me by Another Level. Anything that gets people dancing however with the looper it allows me to also create chilled out versions of each song depending on the setting/venue.

LVL: What are your plans for the future?

John: My plan is to keep working on my skills, constantly promoting myself and my venues, giving a great quality performance, providing an atmosphere that keeps feet on the dance floor, keep engaging with my audience even between sets, if a venue hires my services for an evening then I don’t stop working, if I’m not performing I’m promoting that particular venue, it’s my job to ensure people are having a good time.
