We recently told you about the International Physical Theatre Festival coming to Liverpool between the 10th and 15th of June — a week of intriguing local and international alternative theatrical performances. Last night we attended the first night and witnessed two performances — both spellbinding and captivating in their own right.

We attended Unity Theatre on a rainy Tuesday night, not knowing quite what to expect. We already knew that ‘Physical Fest’ has a reputation for left field productions and that Unity Theatre (the main venue for this year’s festival) loves to showcase such out of the box talent, however we were not prepared for what was about to unfold before our eyes!

When we got to the ultra modern renovated theatre on Hope Place, there was a real buzz about the venue. Street food was being provided by Bistro Noir of Lark Lane and there was a DJ as people congregated in the bar area — eagerly anticipating the shows ahead. The programmes provided some info, but we couldn’t possibly have expected what we witnessed that night!

The first event was ‘I Cried Because I Had No Shoes Until…’ by Japanese artist Izumi Ashizawa. With a small Japanese woman and a tall white male performing alternative theatre alongside a mesmerising live music performance, it was a thrilling abstract performance like no other!

With a dark, sinister score being played, the pair engaged in a surreal exchange of acting — with a twisted ongoing battle based on shoes and clothes. The shoes, and quite prominently a red shoe, took control of them as they became possessed each time they wore them. The audience was kept on edge throughout and we left wondering what on earth we had just witnessed. Unbelievable stuff — such is art!

The second performance of the night was Butt Kapinski and what an experience this was! Presented by American actress Deanna Fleysher, this interactive murder mystery consisted of the audience sat in a circle in a dark room with the only light coming from private eye, Butt Kapinski, who took us on a film noir journey through crimes in an American city.

With every member of the audience involved at some point, it was a hugely entertaining and at times hilarious and outrageous showcase — with host Butt Kapinski providing a laugh a minute — particularly with his/her speech impediment. We all participated in an improvised roller coaster journey through dark, gritty crimes in a city — culminating in an outlandish and sordid ending.

It’s difficult to describe the shows that night, but it’s safe to say that there’s nothing quite like this on offer in the city! Physical Fest 2019 is running until 15th June 2019 and at the time of writing all the workshops are sold out however there are a handful of tickets still left for performances over the next few days. If you’re looking for diversity and something a bit different in Liverpool then look no further than this! Fascinating stuff!
