It’s been a busy time for the emphatic indie heroes, with a recent U.S tour, the new Western Approaches album launch and a forthcoming UK tour that culminates in their epic Liverpool showcase — set to be their biggest gig to date. Here’s what they had to say in our little Q&A….

LVL: So guys, congratulations on the fourth album! How would you describe it to those who haven’t heard it yet?

RRC: Thank you! The new album kinda feels similar to our debut album in many ways. We’ve enjoyed revisiting our roots with it and we can’t wait for people to hear it.

LVL: How would you compare it to the previous three? Any different influences and inspirations this time?

RRC: This album is the first time we changed producers so that took a little bit of getting used to. The songs feel familiar and nostalgic in a way because we have used old riffs and motifs that we have had since we started, but until now we didn’t manage to get them into a song.

LVL: How long has it been in the making and what has the process been like putting it together?

RRC: It’s always a strange complex releasing an album to the world. To everyone else it’s something that’s brand new, but for us it’s been about 18 months in the making! Longer if you count the old riffs we had knocking about!

LVL: What was the recent US tour like that preceded this latest album?

RRC: We have been lucky enough to tour North America twice since the release of our last record. It’s always an amazing adventure for us and it’s encouraging to see it grow each time. We return to America in May ‘24 to tour Western Approaches too!

LVL: Any favourite gigs or standout memories from that tour?

RRC: The last US tour we were lucky enough to support The Wombats. They let us wear the Wombat suits and go up on stage dancing every night during their set. I think we boys might have enjoyed this more than the gigs themselves haha!

LVL: With so much going on — US and UK tours, the new album, how on earth do you stay sane and on top of it all?

RRC: We’re lucky to be in this position. There are loads of great bands who would do anything to be doing what we’re doing so we make sure to remember that at all times. It’s a privilege for us so we enjoy it and make the most of it!

LVL: Looking ahead to this huge forthcoming M&S Arena gig, what can we expect? A mix of the new album material and your biggest hits so far?

RRC: It’s something we’ve spoken about together now that we have 4 albums worth of material. We don’t want to neglect any one of our records when making the set list, so people can expect to hear a bit of everything!

LVL: How will an arena gig compare to playing smaller venues? Will you have to adapt in certain ways?

RRC: There are certain technical aspects that we have to consider for the arena show. Luckily we have some amazing people around us who can guide us here. But as for the band we just have to stick to what we’re doing. Doing the things that got us to the arena in the first place.

LVL: A message to your fans prior to this, quite possibly your biggest gig to date?

RRC: We would just want to say that we don’t take any of this for granted. We still can’t believe that this many people in our city have got behind us to the point where we can play the arena. It’s the first thing we think of when we wake up and the last thing before we go to sleep. It has been for months. We will do everything we can to make it a night to remember for Liverpool.

LVL: And finally, we’ve always wanted to know this! Why are you called Red Rum Club? Is it the drink, the horse, murder backwards or neither?

RRC: A friend of ours heard our sound and recommended we watch a load of old horror movies to find some inspiration for a band name — Tom watched The Shining and the rest is history!
