Liverpool is a magnificent city to find champions of the niche. Music, theatre and certainly cinema are well renowned notches in our belt, with Sunday, September 22nd proving no exception to the rule.

HarrisWorks returns to Seel Street’s Phase One for their 4th in this year’s Sounds & Silence cinema series with Alfred Hitchcock’s Blackmail (1929).

HarrisWorks is a grass-roots organisation headed by Leona Harris who is bringing light to that silver screen with her own distinct twist. Sounds & Silence cinema is a series that seamlessly blends silent films, each with an original music score composed and performed by acclaimed pianist Tony Judge.

Previous screenings have included exemplars of cinema’s silent era such as Metropolis (1927), The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920) and Nosferatu (1922) — the latter of which you can find hosted at Phase One as the Halloween instalment of this series of Sounds & Silence cinema on Sunday 27th October.

Each previous screening has been met with apt celebration and September 22nd’s showing of Blackmail will be a solid addition to HarrisWorks’ illustrious canon.

Blackmail itself is a thriller wrought with all the Hitchcockian hallmarks one can come to expect in his later outings. It is a curious piece of work in that Blackmail was the UK’s first foray into the world of ‘all-talkies’ (feature films with complete sound).

Hitchcock famously dismissed sound as a fad and a nuisance and so did the general public by all accounts, as the silent version of Blackmail ran for considerably longer than its noisy cousin.

For September 22nd’s screening, Sounds & Silence cinema is to take Hitchcock’s recommendation and opt for the silent version of Blackmail — albeit imbued with the ivory-tapping talents of Tony Judge. HarrisWorks consistently provides a fantastic night out and will continue to do so. You don’t want to miss Leona and Tony Judge at Phase One on Seel Street this Sunday, 22nd of September for their screening of Blackmail.

You can also catch a screening of Nosferatu on October, 27th (and a further one on the 31st at a venue tbc) and a Christmas matinee on December 15th (film tbc) — both at Phase One, 40 Seel Street.
