The iconic multi-award winning pub, located in New Brighton on the banks of the Mersey, has been getting rave reviews since chefs Dean Griffiths and Andy Pilling came on board.

The Magazine Hotel, built in 1759 and steeped in history, is loved by many for its character, charm and dream location on Magazine Brow looking out to the Mersey — with a cracking beer garden to the rear. Many awards have been won, such as CAMRA’s Wirral Pub Of The Year, Wirral Community Pub Of The Year and a feature in The Good Beer Guide, but it’s the food that’s got people talking the most recently.

Having just received a 5 star food hygiene rating, The Magazine Hotel has become one of the best destinations in Wirral to enjoy quality food in a charming setting. Dean, Andy and the kitchen team use fresh, local produce to create home-cooked gastro pub classics alongside alternative dishes from around the world such as Bunny Chow and Thai Fried Rice.

Starters such as Pigs In Blankets, Fishcakes and Goats Cheese Bon Bons have been big hits as well as small plates, whilst mains such as Corned Beef Hash, Scouse and Three Pigs Smokey are popular mains. The burgers have been flying out and the Sunday Roasts are back for February — excellent value at £12.99, two courses for £16.99 or three courses for £19.99.

As such, ‘The Mags’ has been a very popular choice for winter warmers amongst promenade walkers and those seeking a traditional pub dining experience. There’s even more to look forward to in the warmer months though, with a Spring/Summer menu coming, an outside bar and grill for the beer garden and a huge free four day beer festival commencing Thursday 3rd July.

Landlord Stephen Brady, who has recently celebrated 25 years at the pub, said: “Dean and Andy really have been a revelation and we’ve literally doubled the takings on food since they came on board at the back end of 2023. Mary and I are grateful to the whole team for the work they put in to maintain our reputation as an iconic pub and raise our standards even higher.”

Stephen continued: “The food here has never been better and whilst we remain a traditional pub, we’ve moved with the times with some improved furnishings and necessary maintenance and repairs to the outside of the building. We have some exciting plans for the warmer months with a bar and grill in the beer garden and the big beer festival in July, whilst we have great live music every Friday and Saturday night.”
