A LOOK INSIDE ONE OF TURKEY’S LEADING COSMETIC SURGERY COMPANIES
Cosmetic surgery and dentistry in the UK is worth an eye-watering £10 billion annually. It’s big business and in most cases an extremely costly affair for the patient. As a result, an ever-growing number of British people are turning to Turkey as a much cheaper alternative. Here we ask the question: is Turkish aesthetics and dentistry a safe and effective option?

We visited Esteworld in Istanbul — one of Turkey’s leading cosmetic surgery companies. Founded in 1994 by Dr. Mustafa Tuncer, the organisation has completed almost 1 million procedures and continues to carry out around 3,000 operations per month. Offering dentistry, hair transplants, rhinoplasty and a wide range of aesthetic enhancements, treatments are delivered in luxury and at a fraction of UK costs.
With a staggering £100 million per annum turnover, the company has been taking the industry by storm and is showing no signs of slowing down. Yet, despite countless 5 star reviews, over 30 years of expertise and a team of top professionals, many Brits are still sceptical due to negative stigmas and scare tactics from the British press.

In this investigative feature, we give you an inside view of the operation, meet the C.E.O and address any concerns directly. Our press trip alongside other journalists consisted of tours of Esteworld’s Istanbul clinics — interviewing surgeons and patients alike over the course of a weekend. I have to say, from the plush clinics to the impeccable service, I was mightily impressed by what I saw.

During our interviews with C.E.O Burak Tuncer in his office overlooking the city, I was keen to hear his thoughts about bad publicity of medical tourism in Turkey. He explained: “When my father founded Esteworld in 1994, he became the pioneer of medical tourism in Turkey. He was running a hospital here in Istanbul and when he realised Turkish celebrities were going abroad for cosmetic surgery, he set out to make Turkey the best in the industry.”
He continued: “We now have 35 offices across the globe and this long term success doesn’t happen by chance. We recruit and train elite surgeons and carry out up to 100 operations per day. We own laboratories and are fully endorsed by the Ministry Of Health. We treat people from many different countries and we are partners with the United Nations. We have a satisfaction rate of 99.2% and those not satisfied are mostly locals who can’t get an appointment.”

You won’t find this kind of information in the British press. Instead, you’ll find horror stories about surgeries going wrong, people scarred for life and even dying. For prestigious companies such as Esteworld, fighting back against the negative stigmas and stories that make British people wary is a constant battle.
Dr. Tuncer explains: “It is a constant battle and one that we work closely with the Ministry Of Health to combat. We get inspected regularly, as do all clinics here, but unfortunately there are clinics with lower standards and underground clinics that simply open up again after being shut down. My advice is, as with anything, do your research. Check the reviews and expertise. Even better, come and see the clinics and meet the doctors for yourself.”

Going behind the scenes and witnessing the processes and procedures was very insightful and everything was carried out with meticulous precision. One of the patients we spoke to, Wakim from Holland, told us that the hair transplant he was having was a gift from his wife. She had given him a birthday card with an A.I image of him with hair inside and a voucher for Esteworld — he was clearly very happy.
Eastenders actor Anto Sharp was also at the clinic, one of many UK celebrities who they’ve worked with. He told us: “The guys here have cared for me and looked after me, it’s been a really good experience. They’ve got offices in London too, it’s where I first had a consultation. If anyone is considering Esteworld I can vouch for them, they’re really good — good care and hospitality. Get down to Istanbul!”

After tours of the clinics, we were then shown Esteworld’s latest project, and perhaps their most ambitious to date: Well World. Two hours outside the city, on the coast of the Black Sea, a huge new wellbeing resort is being developed — set to be the largest longevity club in Europe and due to be fully completed by 2028.
Well World will blend Esteworld’s 30 year legacy of cosmetic surgery with advanced health diagnostic systems, longevity protocols, aesthetic applications, modern medicine, functional medicine and a holistic approach to wellbeing. With luxury waterfront and woodland accommodation, the resort will operate on a membership basis — offering members the opportunity to invest in their health and manage their ageing process.

Whilst at the new development, we had the opportunity to meet Esteworld Founder and President, Dr. Mustafa Tuncer, and the wider family. They were genuine, warm people and clearly a loving family — indeed, a family who have build an empire and one of Turkey’s most prestigious medical brands. Huge kudos to Dr. Burak Tuncer for continuing his father’s great work with such forward-thinking drive.

Well World is a huge project that will cost over £100 million to complete, but Esteworld is certainly not neglecting growth of its aesthetics operation. As Dr. Burak Tuncer explained: “We have recently opened offices in Tokyo, London and New York. It’s important that we have a presence as far and wide as possible and that customers can contact us directly in their own countries. We have big plans to expand in the U.S — as with Europe, this is a huge market.”

During our visit we had time for plenty of sightseeing — including Istanbul city and boat tours. Not only was I thoroughly impressed by Esteworld’s operation and their commitment to perfection, I was also truly charmed by the hospitality of our hosts, and indeed their city. A melting pot of flavours, culture and history, Istanbul is a lively coastal city where East meets West and worlds collide — enjoying a holiday with VIP hospitality is one of the benefits of going to Esteworld for treatment.

In the world of journalism and media, there will always be many different spins and angles. In terms of Turkish medical tourism, there’s no question that there will inevitably be bad practises — as there will be in the UK and in any industry. But after going deep inside Esteworld, it’s clear to see that they are outstanding in their field and very good at what they do — with a proven track record and big numbers.
My question remains — why does the British press not report on the success of medical tourism and companies like Esteworld? Why do we only hear about horror stories? As much as the British press attempts to deter people from looking abroad for much cheaper alternatives, Esteworld’s expertise is irrefutable — and this is something I can attest to first-hand after this thoroughly informative visit.
