ALMOST 34K RAISED TO HELP WALLASEY RUGBY CLUB GET BACK ON ITS FEET!
The recent Crowdfunder campaign to help Wallasey Rugby Club get back on its feet following the pandemic has raised an incredible £33,684! A triumph for community spirit and a great show of generosity from supporters, the success of the project means that the club can carry out vital work and grow as it approaches its 100th birthday.

The Crowdfunder reached its target due to a sustained team effort from the club and its members, notably Club President David Bott, First Team Captain Rob Welsh and Club Chairman Dave Powell. Also pivotal in the success of the project was Project Co-Ordinators Matt Ball (You Can Make A Change) and Justin Hopper (La Vida Liverpool).

Club President David Bott said: “I can’t tell you enough how delighted we are to have hit our target. This means so much to the club and everyone involved. It’s been a great team effort and everyone connected to the club has really got behind us. A huge thank you to all who have donated — especially those who aren’t associated with the club. It’s really touching.”
He continued: “We must also thank all the local businesses who have supported us through direct donations and sponsorship boards, and also the ones who have donated rewards as prizes. Then there’s the media companies such as BBC Radio Merseyside, The Liverpool Echo, The Wirral Globe, The Guide Liverpool, Explore Liverpool and others who have helped promote our campaign. It’s just been amazing!”

The money raised from the project will help the club in a number of ways after being hit hard and losing a great deal of revenue due to the pandemic. The club had planned to make vital improvements to their facilities but they were unable to due to the effects of Covid19. Thanks to the Crowdfunder they can now do so and funds raised will be spent on:
- Accessible disabled toilet facilities in the bar area that will mean people with disabilities and mobility issues feel welcomed at the club
- New floodlights that will enable them to train all year around and play more night time rugby when the season starts
- A covered outdoor seating area on the existing patio to increase capacity and support with Covid guidelines
- Improvements to the changing facilities to accommodate the increase in rugby players
- New playing equipment for all the junior and adult teams
- Equipment and resources to improve and maintain the condition of the pitches

David Bott said: “It’s been an emotional journey and there were times when we didn’t think we’d hit our target — it was an all or nothing thing too, so the pressure was really on! The guys at Crowdfunder were amazing and helped us get extra exposure and funding. I must also give a special mention to Sport England too — they put in £10,000 and without them we would’ve fallen short.”
He continued: “We’re in the process of giving out all the rewards to those who have donated and selected one. This includes our big Christmas party on 4th December featuring comedian Chrissy Rock and Liverpool band The Sound. We honestly can’t thank everyone enough — this means we will be able to come back bigger and stronger and reach our 100th birthday in a great position.”

The club is now planning to implement the improvements and grow the club with more members and a second team. They are also working to bring in more live entertainment and develop the venue as a community hub and a destination for the people of Wallasey and beyond. The club has been an integral part of the community, but now they aim to build on that for the future.

David Bott summarised: “It’s really refreshing to know that there are so many good people out there who care about our club. This Crowdfunder truly is a triumph for community spirit and it’s amazing to think that people have donated despite this past year being very difficult for most. We’ve learnt so much along this journey, but most importantly we’ve learnt that there are many good people out there who care.”
