What’s Bread & Butter about?

Situated in between the CASA and the Everyman Theatre, you’d be forgiven for thinking the large Georgian building of 23 Hope Street was a residential premises. That said, upon entering you immediately feel at home — such is the warm, cosy and homely environment that owners Stephan and Tomasz have created.

Opened in July 2018, Bread & Butter has been refurbished to a very high standard, with a modern and simplistic style whilst retaining the original Georgian character. With cosy rooms, a secret bar downstairs, an airy conservatory and a gorgeous courtyard, when you visit Bread & Butter you feel as if you’ve found the best kept secret in the city.

With cool music, art on the walls for sale and a sumptuous setting, you’d also be forgiven for thinking Bread & Butter is an expensive place to dine and drink. Despite the fine dining look, feel and taste, Bread & Butter offers quality (hence the countless glowing reviews) at a very reasonable price — and it certainly isn’t pretentious. Such is its beauty, it’s popular as a wedding venue too.

The secret underground bar….

In addition to having a gorgeous restaurant upstairs, Bread & Butter has one of the coolest underground bars in the city. Their new CRAFT bar is a rustic hideout with neon lighting and candles and can be found in the basement leading back round and up to the courtyard. They serve a refined selection of drinks including speciality gins, craft ales and more! Perfect for a secret escape away from the hustle and bustle of Hope Street!

What’s on the menu?

Head Chef and owner, Stephan, won the British Pie Awards twice whilst at Home Baked and was a Celebrity Chef with Asparagus Patch, so you can be assured that you’re in good hands. Bread & Butter is open Tuesday to Sunday from 12pm and offers lunch until 4pm rolling into the dinner menu and Sunday roasts on Sundays.

The menu, like the interior, is simple and minimalist. The refined menu offers 6 starters (all £4.50 each), 7 mains (all £12.50 each), a specials board and 4 desserts (all £4.50 each), so you can choose based on what you want, without the influence of price. As it’s in the theatre district, there’s a great value pre-theatre menu of 3 courses for just £14.50 (Tues — Thur, 5pm — 7pm).

Bread & Butter offers quality French inspired European cuisine with their own unique twist on each dish, whilst always using fresh ingredients. At Bread & Butter they have a refined quality wine list too, with 6 reds, 6 white and a rose all at a great price, and a great selection of beers and spirits in their ‘Craft’ basement bar.

Our visit….

We visited on a Friday night prior to seeing a performance at The Hope Street Theatre over the road. We opted for a bottle of Levorato Sauvignon Blanc — a quality wine at a reasonable £20. To start, my partner had Vegan Black Pudding Potato Fritters, whereas I had Maple Glazed Crispy Pork Belly.

For our mains, my partner chose Seabass from the specials board, whereas I opted for Steak Frites from the main menu. A wonderful dining experience and such well presented dishes — classy yet not pretentious, quality yet not expensive and a perfect balance of formal and informal. Cool, casual dining in a sumptuous environment and highly recommended.
