A desperate Liverpool mother has launched a Crowdfunder appeal to help raise money for legal fees for a big court case that she won, but has been appealed by the defence. Georgina Tang, owner of natural skincare brand Yours Naturally Naturally Yours, won a ground-breaking case against Kate McIver Skin Limited earlier this year.

Despite succeeding in the claim of ‘Reverse Passing Off’ and Copyright Infringement after four long years of legal battle, the legal costs have put a huge strain on Ms Tang’s business and her family. After spending almost £200,000 on legal costs, she was due to receive compensation only for Kate McIver Skin Limited to appeal the case and put further strain on her financially.
The Crowdfunder aims to raise a further £15,000 required for Ms Tang to return to court for the appeal from the defence. Georgina is a well known pioneer of results-driven skincare and haircare products within the beauty industry. She has created many ‘miracle’ formulas that have had profound results on people through her multi-award winning brand. One of these products was her ‘Elixir’ antiaging serum that was used by the late Kate McIver when she was having chemotherapy in 2017.

Georgina started creating products for her son, Alessio, when he underwent chemotherapy in 2013. She created “skin-kind” hair care to encourage hair growth with great success, as he now has a full head of hair. In addition, she created a shea butter balm and following this severe psoriasis soon cleared.
Her initial hobby turned into a full time business to fund his 24/7 care and eventually a legacy for him when she is no longer around. Alessio has severe complex medical and educational needs such as Autism, Attention Deficit Disorder, Learning Difficulties, Sensory processing and communication difficulties to name just a few.

Georgina created Elixir aka ‘Miracle In A Bottle’ in 2015 after having great success with other “skin-kind” products and wanting to create an antiaging formula for her own skin. Due to its profound success, she supplied to beauticians and retailers including Kate McIver — who became a ‘white label’ client.
White label arrangement began in 2018, with Ms. McIver using Georgina’s product name “Elixir” and later changing it to Secret Weapon. Completely unbeknown to Ms Tang, Ms McIver started to misrepresent that she created Elixir aka Secret Weapon whilst she had chemotherapy — even stating that she made it in her own back room with her very own hands.

Kate McIver Skin terminated their working arrangement with immediate effect on November 30th 2018 — launching Secret Weapon Limited Edition based on Elixir the very next day. Kate McIver’s ‘Secret Weapon’ shot to fame with the fake story that she created it while she underwent chemotherapy and was championed by influencers and celebrities.

On 20th April 2023, Judge Hacon in the Intellectual Property Enterprise Court in Manchester declared the case victorious in the favour of Ms Tang. The case has since been dubbed ‘The Secret Weapon Scandal’ and has been subject to various coverage in the press, however the appeal from the defence has now extended the case and has left Ms Tang on the verge of financial ruin.

Ms Tang said: “I almost suffered a nervous breakdown and have had many sleepless nights over the past four years — I have been worried sick about losing my business and home as my business is our only income. Our son Alessio has many complex medical conditions. and I set up this business to provide him a quality life and also to create a legacy fund for his 24/7 hours care, as he requires this for life. Now I might lose everything that we worked and saved hard for.”
“As a family, we have made so many sacrifices to save money to continue with the fight for justice. I even have to cut back on milk for Alessio by half, drink water instead to save around £20 a month. He only ever drink milk all his life. Yes I have to buy expired food using the ‘Too good to go’ app. No heating and hardly any lighting to save on fuel costs. I have cried on many occasions and often asked: ‘Why me and my family as we have done nothing wrong and always help others generously?‘”
“It’s so wrong and utterly unfair that I have to spend almost £300,000 to reclaim what’s mine. We have been to hell and back since 2019 and used up all our life savings and profits from my business fighting Kate McIver Skin. Can you imagine having to run a business, looking after my sick son, and dealing with a prolonged legal battle like this. It’s mentally exhausting and utterly distressing.”
“I have to keep fighting because if I stopped I would lose the whole case by default. Therefore, I am pleading for your donation urgently, £5, £10, £20, £50, £100, or whatever you can to help pay the legal costs, so that I can get justice, reclaim my invention and protect my family’s livelihood.”

The appeal hearing is set for 30th November 2023 and Ms Tang remains confident in winning the appeal. She needs to raise £15,000 in legal fees and anyone who donates more than £10 to her Crowdfunder appeal receives up to 50% off her natural skincare products and the chance to win free natural skincare products for a year.
