THE NEW CHILDREN’S GROUP BRIDGING THE GAP IN CHILD DEVELOPMENT!

A new baby and pre-school group has been set up to help young children develop their learning — giving them a head start before they go to school. Little Story Learners was set up in April 2021 by primary school teacher, Emily Boden, in order to bridge the gap and combine multi sensory play and reading to enhance early development — with amazing results so far!

Whilst on maternity leave and in the middle of the pandemic, Emily started to create play stations for her daughter and designed them around learning aims, interests and books. The results and progress in her daughter’s learning were phenomenal and Little Story Learners was born. Emily has since carefully crafted a course structure to ensure learning development for all ages, meaning siblings and friends can all attend the sessions together.

In a recent survey from the NAHT headteachers’ union and the Family and Childcare Trust, it was revealed that children are increasingly likely to arrive at primary school unable to speak effectively or use the toilet independently. Almost a quarter of heads said that more than half their reception class were “not ready” for school, according to the survey of 780 school leaders, so early child development is more important than ever.

Speech and communication skills – such as children finding it difficult to express themselves and describe what they need – were the most common difficulties, with 97 per cent of headteachers saying they were an issue. Understanding the real need to combine play with learning, Emily set out on a mission to bridge the gap and give as many children a head start as possible.

Emily said: “Seeing my eldest daughter so engrossed in the multi sensory play stations, developing her early writing skills, hand eye coordination and watching her imagination grow in her play… There was no way I could not develop this and bring it to others.”

She continued: “The benefits of multi sensory, child led play are amazing and I could see the potential in creating a supportive, fun and educational class for all pre-school ages. Working so closely with our families has been a real pleasure and the feedback has been tremendous.”

The group initially started in Wirral but expanded to Liverpool as Zoe-Louise Dailly and her daughter loved the sessions so much. Zoe, a fully qualified Primary Teacher with both a Degree and Masters in Primary Teaching and Disability Studies, could see the learning potential and benefits immediately so joined forces with Emily and took the concept to Liverpool.

Zoe said: “I started attending Little Story Learners in the Wirral when they first started. At the time my daughter was just 9 months old. From the moment I walked into the class, I could see the learning potential and benefits immediately. It sang to my Early Years Teaching soul! Becoming a Little Story Learners class teacher has been an exciting and fulfilling experience where my passion for the EYFS curriculum is expanded every day.”

The sessions start with a welcome song, followed by fun learning activities that are checked against the Early Years Framework. The emphasis is on ‘Explore, Play, Discover’ and the child led activities encourage them to create things and explore a wide range of subjects including jobs, magic, meditation and mindfulness. Children are encouraged to express themselves, learning how to communicate effectively before attending school.

Emily said: “The aim is to provide our Littles a chance to be free in their exploration, experience new and fun things whilst practising key skills such as mark making, scooping and pouring. All of this plus beautiful books, singing and signing! We use parent prompts to help bridge the gap and give children a head start before they get to school.”

Little Story Learners offers a space where children can get messy and creative rather than make a mess at home and the broad age range means that the children get to interact with children of different ages. Parents are also given support and the tools to teach their children at home too — further enhancing their development.
