THE WIRRAL KIDS’ CLUBS COMBATTING THE CHILD MENTAL HEALTH CRISIS!

0

A Wirral kids’ club concept has been set up to help combat the child mental health crisis. Positivity Club was created during lockdown by Jessica Trigg in response to alarming new statistics that 1 in 6 children suffer from a mental health disorder — with a club for younger children and one for teens.

Positivity Club and its sister club Time For Teens are based in Hoylake and West Kirby and provide a safe and inclusive space for children to play — with games and activities that promote mental, physical and emotional wellbeing. Positivity Club for younger children is held every Saturday morning at Cub & Calf whereas Time For Teens is a youth club at St. Luke’s every Wednesday evening.

During the sessions there are various fun games, all with different themes that encourage wellbeing, and the children learn about emotions, coping with mental health issues, kindness and more. Activities include arts and crafts, creativity, music, meditation, mindfulness, fitness and more — with occasional guest speakers such as local celebrities.

Since being created in October 2020, the concept has really taken off — with many 5 star reviews from parents for both Positivity Club and Time For Teens. Parents have found their children to be a lot calmer, happier and balanced after attending — something that is essential during the child mental health crisis in which NHS waiting lists for mental health issues are often over 12 months long.

Founder Jessica Trigg has over 16 years’ experience in pre-school teaching and learning — having taught internationally and having a multitude of qualifications such as QTS in Primary Education, Level 3 SENCO and many more. Her aim was to bridge the gap by offering an extra-curricular play group and youth club with an emphasis on improving wellbeing.

Jessica said: “We live in a society where child mental health issues are on the rise in an alarming way. A shocking 1 in 6 children aged 5 to 16 years old identified as having a probable mental disorder in the official 2020 NHS report and this figure is likely to have increased further following Covid and lockdowns. I myself suffered from mental health issues as a child and teenager so I know what it’s like.”

She continued: “With mental health waiting lists really long there’s a huge gap and both teachers and parents are being out under huge pressure. Lockdowns gave us lots of time to think and that’s when I came up with the idea of a play group and youth club that improves mental, physical and emotional wellbeing — with games and activities that benefit children’s wellbeing.”

The concept is ran by Jessica and a team of volunteers — with Positivity Club just £15 per child per session and Time For Teens ran on a donation basis. After 18 months of fantastic feedback and many happy children and parents, Jessica is now in the process of setting up a Community Interest Organisation so that she can help even more children.

Jessica said: “We’re based in Hoylake and West Kirby and children travel from all over to come — as far as Bromborough and Bebington — but of course we’re limited as to how many we can help. I’d like to take this concept to all areas of Merseyside — to help children all over the region — and also set up a special educational needs group. Setting up a CIO means we can apply for funding to expand our services and reach more children.”
