We recently brought you a fascinating musical play about the life of Cynthia Lennon at The Hope Street Theatre and we attended the opening night of the sell out week long production. ‘This Girl: The Cynthia Lennon Story’ came to Hope Street’s thriving theatre during International Beatle Week and provided an international audience with an interesting insight into the life of an iconic woman.

There was much hype and anticipation leading up to the performance, with lots of local and national coverage including features in The Guardian and the BBC news. Playwright Mike Howl was exploring the life of Cynthia Lennon like never before and had conducted thorough research in order to deliver an intriguing depiction of her life before, during and after Beatlemania.

We arrived at The Hope Street Theatre for a packed opening night. The Hope Street Theatre, situated in the Masonic building, is part of The Hope Street Collective and has been doing great things this last year to promote theatre and creativity in our city. A fantastic theatre with an adaptable space, you’ll find all sort of interesting productions on offer.

The much anticipated play was a clever mix of acting, singing and pre-recorded filming and took us on a journey through Cynthia’s life. We learnt about her early art college life, her relationship with her friends and how she met John Lennon. We were taken on the emotional journey through her relationship with John as she became pregnant with Julian and The Beatles rose to stardom.

The script was well written and the rising stars of Liverpool’s acting scene all bounced off each other with a great chemistry — it was clear to see that their countless hours of rehearsing had given them all a strong connection. The black and white filming clips shot on location added that gritty and nostalgic edge — transporting the audience to times gone by.

The opening night of any production is always the most nerve wracking for the cast and crew, but these guys smashed it and were a shining example of Liverpool’s thriving theatre scene. This Girl: The Cynthia Lennon Story was yet another cracking play to come out of Liverpool and there’s no doubt that the world of Liverpool theatre is getting better and better!

Following the international attendance that week, the production is being taken to Germany and there are other plans for it to be taken on tour. These are very exciting times indeed for Liverpool theatre and despite there being so much focus on music in our city, more and more noise is coming from our thriving theatre scene.
